Agreed with this

The point where I think some people change their stated distances is when they stop getting roll. For example; I won't get much run from my 7-W so my yardage is usually where it pitches. However, my 3-6 will likely roll out a bit which means the overall distance will probably be up a little. I still try and work off carried distance though. If I've got 190 to the flag, I'll take a club which carries 180-185 anticipating a bit of roll out.

I will yet plenty of 5 irons this year to flags 200+ yards away, however, without a strong wind helping, not one of them will be pitching there!

I just dont have the distance to match the modern day pros

I should only start worrying about it when you have to play a 500yd par 4 with no shot. The game they play has no significance whatsoever distance-wise to the one we play.

Also, they will not care one bit what club they hit into a green. It's all about putting the ball where they want it.
Yes they do hit ridiculous clubs sometimes. I think Sergio was behind a tree 176yds out yesterday and put it in a greenside bunker with a 9 iron.
On the other hand, the day the 17th was playing 122yds most of them were hitting PW.

It's whatever gets the job done. Tiger I think hit either a 7 or 8 iron to a 190-odd par 3 at the weekend. He didn't choose that club because it would look good to us choppers watching. He chose it because in his opinion it was the best club to produce the shot he wanted. If you could guarantee getting within 10' if he used a 3 wood on a 190yd par 3 he'd bite your hand off for it.

As for commentators getting clubs wrong, I don't think that happens very often. The caddies and on-course commentators have a system of hand signals to communicate what club is being used.

Have you tried golflogix. Friends in the US swear by it. At the end of the round, it will email your scores to their website and provides some good stats.

To be honest I think you need to adjust your expectations if you are thinking about hitting it as far as the pros consistently. Do you expect to punch as hard as a pro boxer, run as fast as a pro sprinter, kick a ball as hard as a pro footballer?
Theses are the best in the world at what they do.

You also need to consider that they are adjusting for wind, playing in perfect conditions, which are factors that are not always obvious to you watching on TV, and they make the sweetest contact...

Your distances do have room for improvement, 145y 7 iron is pretty short, assuming you are young and fit. But forget how far the likes of Tiger are hitting it, just focus on improving your own game.

Quality of strike is a huge factor. I was on a flightscope yesterday, 111mph driver swing speed average and decent distances, but my smash factor numbers were in the 1.36 to 1.40 range, considering the pros are up at or near 1.5 thats a lot of extra ball speed they are getting through quality of contact alone.

You do well, off that SS it looks like you're carrying around 270 great distance for a 15 hcapper. In relation to 145 being short for a 7iron.. Many teaching pro's will agree that us mere mortals exaggerate our carry and that averages are around 140 - 155 for a 7iron. Getting around 5 yards of roll on that

Cheers, went on flightscope again tonight for a driver fitting, SS ave varied a lot with different clubs which was interesting. The Callaway I hit at the weekend I was consistently getting a higher swing speed, but quality of strike was little down on the alternates, overall it did not perform as well as the other options.
I'll post the data up in another thread, carry wasn't as far as 270 on average, some good ones were out there but not on average.
