what chipping style do you use?

a mix between myself, phil and bob! my short game was always pretty good but ive now added the simple chip and run to my bow. i had previously made this shot more difficult for myself by using too much loft.

secret to chipping. weight on left side and dont let the clubhead pass the hands (hands infront of the ball) :)

thats more what I was using Amanda. The reason for the qustion was for answers like yours, I know theres not one method for all but as my all round game has got so poor due to over complicating it and watching too many vids and such.

Oh and I am also aware practice makes perfect not just choosing a method ;)

The chip and run for me feels the least complicated and has the least margin of error. So if there's no hazard in front I'll use that every time. I don't overthink it rather than look at it like a putt and then a few swishes for feel and then hit it. The one thing I sometimes think if I catch a couple a bit heavy is Seve saying "chip with zee knees" - not sure he ever said that but he says it to me a few times on the course!

Once it gets to needing to get the ball up and down quickly I do need to think about technique a little more but this is also the type of shot I practice a lot more. Slow games I chip up and over my bag repeatedly whilst waiting...

Surely the opposite. An up slope will decrease loft?

Depends on how you stand, I always align myself to the slope and keep my weight on my lead foot. This makes the same club hit the ball higher, to compensate I take a lower lofted club to achieve the same shot as a higher lofted club.

Its that bloomin simple isnt it! My pro told me that earlier this year and I have never chipped or pitched better.

I am not comfortable chip and running it at all. Trying to do a putting motion with a 7 or 8 iron feels really clumsy to me and I thin it regularly or hit it too hard and run it through. I can see the method has merits but for the foreseeable I will be using a more lofted club.
As for technique, I stand square to slightly open, ball in the middle, weight favouring front foot, hands well ahead of club head.
For a high one over trouble the ball moves a little forward, the stance opens, the club face opens and I use a full follow through, so the takeaway might be to 9o'clock, but the followthrough is all the way to a hollywood finish - this helps me not quit on the shot.

does anyone stand closed when doing chip and run shots?

if i know the ground isnt soft i will change to a closed stance. swing with a slightly in to out motion and have the hands leading the shot. grounds needs to be slightly firm for this.

if its soft, ill stand open and swing slightly out to in but keep the hands always ahead of the ball.

ball back of center in the stance for both these methods.

I was fluffing chips at the weekend and thinning pitches:o

I like Furyks method for chipping...........

My coach taught me similar to Jim in that the landing spot should be a couple of paces on the green and the club selection depends then on how far away the pin is. Works for me although have a tendancy to manipulate my 8 iron more than I should as I like that club!

the thing to rememeber is that we dont play every week on perfect greens so sometimes it makes sense to carry the ball slightly further than jim is saying here. i find it easier on really fast slick greens. sometimes a nailed stinger two iron might not get the ball rolling up some of the more hairy greens.

I tend to use the like a putter method and practice using the v easy, it's the strongest part of my game. Usually use an 8 iron if a bit of run is required or the 52 if I need a bit of loft or to a nearer pin position.

I saw that furyk video last week very good.

Chip and run for me too. I just try to visualise the ball landing and releasing out. I like to be a bit wristy too as it feels like I'm driving the ball forward. If i'm too rigid it all goes pear shaped and I usually end up not getting a good hit on it and coming up short. If there's anything in the way then it's back to the good old "pick a spot, say a prayer, get it in the air, don't quit on it and keep your blinking head down!!" approach!
It's fair to say I prefer chip and run!:)

I use a 60 wedge, with the ball well off the back foot, hands forward and hit steep into the back of the ball. I find this gives me a low flight with a lot of check. Not everyones cup of tea, but works great for me

Using the linear method as the lesser of many evils until I can get my teaching pro to sort me out once and for all. Its all in my head I'm sure but for now the thought of a short chip just off the green to a hole no more than a few away keeps me awake at night
