Yesterday I was up the club practicing my short game when someone who played in my county team last year turned up. He explained he had joined the club. Last year he was a quality player, off 2. But now he's got down to +1 and plays for England Boys! So there I was on a sunday afternoon expecting to practice some short game for a few hours then hit the range, when i'm stood on the 1st tee with probably the best player i've ever played with.

He went on to shoot 4 under par and i played some good golf and shot even. To get beaten by 4 shots shooting level gross is crazy. We're going to play again soon and possibly sort a game with his mate, Laurie Canter who has the lowest handicap in the whole of the world!

What a day! :)

That sounds way cool, was he a nice guy too?

Great job on the scrach score, not your 1st time I guess?

Always good to play with seriously good players. I grew up as a kid playing with a few who went on to make it on the main tours and also played with a guy off a + handicap again recently, Id forgotten just how good it is possible to be from 100 yards and in.

FOr someone your age it gives you something to aspire to, make the most of playing with the better players

My mate at works lad has just got his amatuer status back I think they have given him +4 to play off, he is ex county, england and euro pro tour member. He is phenominal to watch and play with, a real treat when I get the chance.

The only things that really amazed me were firstly the shot shaping. Every club form 7 iron to driver he shaped. He said there's more margin for error, easier to repeat/ harder to repeat straight shot and easier to get close.

Also the 100 yards in. Chipping not overly wowed by, we had a chipping comp after and he only beat me 10-9. But the wedge play from 50 to 100 yards was insane.

Always an education to watch good players. We've got a guy called Malcolm Reid who is a top player (must be getting onfor senior level) nationally and off +1. He has a unique swing but he has the most wonderous touch from 100 yards in

I ended up playing the back 9 at my course yesterday with someone that had been playing for around 10 years and was obviously alot better player than me (didn't ask what his handicap was) i upped my game alot more and didn't play too bad.

I was plesantly suprised that my driving was prety much as good as his and my allround game was not that far off his. The big diffrence was that if he got in trouble he didn't try the miricale once in a lifetime shot. He just got himself out of trouble in the easiest way possible and gave himeslf a chance with the next shot.

He also seemed to hole every putt from 10feet in.

It's gave me alot of confidence for when i enter my first comps in april to get my first handicap

I played young Graham Davidson in the semi finals of the club championship. He played off +1 at the time and we had a great game. He won 3&2 but no disgrace for old Tommo. A few years back I play Mark Simants in the club championships, he was 4 up at the turn and I won 4 on the bounce. He still beat me up the 17th but he went on to win the medal at Dunbar the following day when he shot 68 and is the present Dunbar club champion, plays off +1. Does your game good, if you can handle it.

Played with a guy once who was 8 under through 9 holes, shook my hand, gave me a smile and then left for home as he was going out that evening

Britney Spears waiting at home with 3 naked girlfriends wouldn't have got me off the course!!

You beat him Joe, assuming you didn't challenge him off scratch !!

We had a +2 player, let it slip to scratch ?, who plays in the roll up. 6'7 and hits the ball miles, just a tad intimidating playing with him, but he is a nice guy and happy to put up with us hackers.

I do not believe you!!! ;)

I remember playing with a guy when i first started off scratch, i was off 24 it was a revelation. He hardly even used the putter,he just kept hitting to within 5 feet and would then tap it in with the last club he had used. on the odd occ he missed the green or ended up in a bunker he again put it close or in the hole. Just so relaxed it was no trouble for him to shoot under par.
