Played at Bedford and County GC today having taken membership til the end of March and possibly/probably move there completely in 2013. It is a lovely course which I've played a couple of times and was in very good nick despite the recent wet weather and today's frost. I was surprised to find all 18 main greens in play and whilst they were a bit frozen they looked amazing.

Anyhow, set out on my own and was let through by a 2 ball and then caught another pair on the 7th who asked me to join them. John and John (easy to remember!) had to have been two of the most charming, delightful playing partners it has been my pleasure to share a round of golf with. They have been playing together for 25+ years and their banter and rapport was great fun to share. They managed to totally include me and put me at ease and were also very complimentary about my game having estimated me to play off 10  The best moment was when John (!!) said "your swing flows so beautifully, you are as supple as a 10 year old whippersnapper" - what charmers

What a positive first round at a new course - loved it

All joking apart, glad you had a good round Amanda.

I played at Kilspindie yesterday, having recently gone on their waiting list for membership. Don't know if I've ever been to a friendlier club - everyone we met either on the course or in the clubhouse either said hello or asked how we'd got on. Really good to find a place like that.

Come down to the Kent meeting at Princes tomorrow and you'll find out what a smooth talking bunch us southerners are, including the Sarf Lunnon Mafia.

ps Bring some warm flapjacks cos ther's gonna be a brass monkey there trying to find a welder

He didn't follow this by saying jingle jangle, now then now then, what have we here?

10 year old whippersnapper, please, in todays climate make her at least 18......;)

Missed the "ows bout that then" as well

ha ha brilliant........

However ........

The first round / visit at a new club can go either way from my experience

At my club i was put out in a comp first ever game with a youngster about 16 who was already a golf snob, and too miserable sods who at first called me a bandit and then pointed out i shoulld practice more, The rest of the round was played in slience

Total knobs but didnt put me off, i am a big guy ( as you would expect being Wolfman ) and able to shrug off this type of behaviour.

If i was spoken in the pub the way they did to me on the course they would be wearing false teeth and eating via a straw now !

Golf course snobbery is not an excuse to be rude

Problem is that they wouldn't consider themselves snobs!

Everyone's equal on the golf course as far as I'm concerned - at least that's my initial attitude!

Thats a good attitude to have, sadly not all members at clubs follow this which is a huge shame for newcomers

What are the merits of switching. What do you get for your bucks

A course that's open is the main criteria at the moment - it has been a bad year and continues to be so at our place. The course is better quality for sure and a bigger ladies section. Otherwise only time will tell - as it's a members club I'm hoping for less societies and pay and players taking up premium tee times too.
