Firstly, sorry in advance as this post is quite long but I want to share my story with someone and the boss won't listen 😂Yesterday I played in the institution of civil engineers annual golf day. Historically they hold a golf day in order to select the team to represent the Welsh region in the national championships. The top four scores for the day qualify. This year it's being held at Pannal Golf Club in Yorkshire, so a fair drive for me from here in South Wales!

The qualifying was held at Cottrell Park on the Button course. My official handicap is 20, but yesterday the maximum I could play off was 18. So I probably had the most frustrating front 9 ever. 2 NRs and a 1 pointer in a row all but ruined my chances of qualifying. But I finished the front 9 with 3 bogies, net pars to steady the ship somewhat.

From that point on everything seemed to click and my first dropped shots came on 16 and 17 with 1 point on each. And once again I thought that was my round finished. I then misread the map on 18, a 320 yard par 4. Despite the warnings of my playing partners, I absolutely nailed a 4 hybrid and the ball took one bounce and went straight in the water. I took the penalty drop and dropped my ball at around 75 yards, which is a nice 3/4 60 degree wedge for me. And put it less than a foot from the flag! Tapped in for a par and managed to score 6 over gross for the back 9!

34 points was enough to get second place, and a spot on the Welsh team. I also only used the driver once during the round and that was on the first!

Unbelievably happy but still slightly gutted about the shots I left out there. But looks like all the hard work is paying off! Now on to the Ashburnham this Sunday for the members and guests!

Well played sir, forget about the ones left out there, I've seen guys shoot 66 gross and give out about the ones they missed, that's golf. I know the best rounds I've played have been littered with missed opportunities.

Sounds like you played more freely once you had your bad patch, that often happens, when we think there's not much to play for we play with a freedom reserved for those practice rounds we don't understand because they're so much lower than our comp rounds. If you find the secret to playing like that from the start, tell me please cos I can only do it a couple of times a year!!!

Good luck in the big one and will be a very proud day to represent the country no doubt. I'm going to assume you're Welsh so if you don't already have some God-awful tacky headcover or towels with a dragon on it, you'd better get one (my wedges are gripped with the tri-colour, always gets a laugh from opposition but I love pulling the flag from the bag!). Have fun!
