Cheers DRW - ive been up to club today and done some more practice.
Tried both the 56 /12 and 60/08 wedges, and seemed to be more consistent with the 60. Ball opposite left heel, weight forward and kept hands low and shaft central ( as opposed to leaning forward), and trying to hit sand 1" behind ball.
Think i will persevere with this technique - biggest challenge was my inconsistency in where the club was entering the sand and this is what i now need to focus on.

Thanks everyone for your input & help here - really appreciated.

Any special reason for having the ball and weight forward?

They were just two points i picked up from peoples feedback and reading stuff/Youtube. Pete Cowan particularly was advising ball opposite left heel (with a 30 degree open stance) and both he and Harrington advised weight to favour left side.

While I agree in normal bunker shots, get it well forward but not on wet hard sand.

There clearly are different techniques that people have success with. On the video Homer posted, Dan Whittaker is teaching weight forward for wet sand, but makes a point of saying this is not required for normal (fluffy) sand?

I think i will need to experiment with weight and ball position, and then stick with the method that is most effective for me - one that i am confident with.

This is what I teach.........
To get the ball out of a bunker you have to get the club under the ball.
If the sand is wet, you have to hit down quite hard to get into the sand.
Position the ball 2-3 inches forward of centre and have the weight 50-50.
Aim your body and clubface at the target.
Then, with a full swing, hit the sand 2-3 inches behind the ball HARD and try and go 2 inches deep into the sand.
This ensures you don't use the bounce and the club gets under the ball.

Thanks Bob for the instruction - when it finally stops raining in Sheffield i'll go to the club and practice this method, using my 60/08 wedge.

Wish I had read this yesterday.
My technique failed miserably - I even resorted to using a lob wedge to take it cleanly of the sand.
