When I first acquired a rescue club, I was convinced it went further than the corresponding iron. As I had 2 different ones (an MD and a Callaway) I purchased a set of irons only 4-PW.
Last week, I visisted the nice chaps at DG to collect a swing training aid, and noticed a shiny 3 iron in the bargain bin. Almost the same as my set, only with a regular YS graphite, but hey, I have reg in my woods anyway.

So, my intention was to "consider" going back to a proper 3 iron instead of a hybrid/rescue.
Anyhow, me and the 3i are now in league together vs. the short par 4s at mine.
I went to the club this afternoon just to see if I could use the range, which nobody seemed bothered by.
I practiced 2 tubes, collected them and then thought I might have a "shoot out" with the 2 rescues and Mr. MacGregor 3 iron.....you know, just to see how the land lies with choices.

Well, unless I've gone totally mad, the Callaway 20 degree

goes a total distance of my 4 iron.

How odd is that? So now the 4 iron is ditched and I'll be carrying 2 x 20 degree clubs for the time being....

It's fairly easy to explain away of course....the new 3 iron is only 1 degree less than my old Callaway 2 iron () and the hybrid just likes to visit the "snow-zone" with so much weight in the sole....

I'm now playing with this......
13 (HT) driver. 17 degree 5 wood. 20 degree 3i 20 degree 3h, then 5-SW incl. GW.

Looks like the bag of a madman.... :)

I might even throw in my 9 wood instead of a 5 iron to look like a complete odd-ball :D

It's actually a revelation in terms of distances.

With the rescues going only 175 and the 5 wood well over 200, there was a nasty gap. I'd been using the 4i/3h for lay-ups and wondering why I was finding myself further away than I'd expected. I suspect carrying a 3i will pay dividends on the 2 190 yard par3s. There's one over 2 lakes (TonyN will remember the thread, and the hole!) where I kept splashing in with a rescue and bounding through with my 5 wood. Also, the last at mine requires a 190 yard shot off the tee and preferably with a hooky one from the whites (which is tucked away to the left).

I tried a few whopping draw/hook bananas with the 3i and it's much more predicatable with this than a rescue.
In fact, the last 4 at mine are looking much more tasty with a 3i in the bag....

I think I remember Dave!

Does seem a bit of an odd setup but, you seem to be so consistent, I know that if you think this is a good set up, it will be!

Still looking for a decent 3 or 4 hybrid/rescue, not found one yet.

Good luck with it, I look forward to seeing you in action again shortly!

Might seem to be the club choice of a Madman but if it works don't knock it. We're always saying on here - Look at the distance not the number on the club!

Yes, and there was me being drawn into the "unnecessary" 3i option because I was SURE the rescue went as far.
