Just got back yesterday, from the Shetland Isles at my niece's wedding, and what a great one it was. A famous Whalsay wedding, what an experience, like nothing I've been to before.
Just one example, there were 10 men, old boys, in charge of butchering and then cooking the Mutton for the wedding reception in the evening. They do all this in an old house, aptly named, "The Cookhouse", in the middle of nowhere that's just used for this purpose.
They have an open fireplace, fuelled with peat dug from the ground, and the Mutton is boiled in large tubs. This is started at about 2pm and they are there all afternoon and evening. It's then transported 2 tubs at a time to the venue.
With over 300 attending the evening celebrations, the food is laid out in a back room, and are looked after by the elderly women. They have to have 5 or 6 sittings to accommodate everybody.
Before we set off on Thursday morning I was chatting to Smiffy via PM and had said to him, "Just waiting for the taxi to the airport at 8am for the long journey ahead".
Anybody like to hazard a guess as to how long the total journey took?
That's from the South Coast in Brighton setting off at 8am, to the Shetland Isles - a small island off the east coast of Shetland called Whalsay.
