I am looking to replace my current wedges (PW/SW), and I am confused about different degrees! What are the equivalent lofts for a PW, and SW? My current wedges came with my set when I brought them (Yonex Cyberstar).
Some advice please.

Hi Reggie,
I think your pitching wedge should be around 48 degrees and your sand wedge around 56 degrees.
Its all personal choice though as I know someone who likes a 54 degree sand wedge and then has a 58 degree lob wedge. Most manufacturers run from 48 degrees up to 60 so the choice is yours.
Just to confuse even further I have recently been looking at the new Titleist Vokeys and they have so many variations of bounce on wedges they are becoming confusing !!!

Reggie,

as well as the loft of your replacement wedges youmay want to consider the bounce they have. Depending on the conditions of your home course, type of turf, type of sand, is it coarse or fine, these can all factors in choosing the correct wedge for your needs.

My wedges are -

Pitching Wedge - Standard

52 degree, 7 degree bounce - My 100 yard Wedge
56 degree, 12 degree bounce - Sand Wedge
60 degree, 9 degree bounce - Lob Wedge

The three custom wedges cover just about everything from 100 yards in and around the green.

I use a standard PW,52, 56. I have two sets of clubs at present and my callaway wedges are forged with mack daddy grooves for extra spin. I have a set of TM and have 52 and 56 TM Z TP wedges. Personally I think most sets today have poorly designed SW and so a decent SW and another wedge are essential. I am not competent enough with my LW so my wedges give enough gaps between lofts and allow me to play loads of different shots

It might be worth checking out what degrees your clubs are and buying what the equivelent would be in the model you are after.

I almost bought some callaway forged wedges to replace my x20's. The pw was 48, gap 52 sand 56 but my pw is 45 gap 50 and sw 55 so the difference in lofts would have been huge.

Trick is to have the degrees equally spaced out. so find out how the rest of your clubs are spaced out first!

got the :

standard pw
gap wedge, 52
lob wedge, 58

doing that 'saves' a club so i can still have the same options with a strong lob wedge.

this means i can carry a 3 iron/hybrid !!

Strong and Lob wedge dont match, well not for me anyway.

My pro told me only to get the lob wedge out when its an absolute must to get over a hazard. I used to love taking it out from 60 yards and stopping it on a sixpence but it was very inconsistent. Now I will take a half to 3/4 gap wedge instead. Now I dont duff much around the green.

He also said that too many people go to this club around the green when they dont need to and its the easiest club to mess up with! The less you use it the better, and he was right!

Something like 51,52 or 53 you just want it to carry right in between your other two wedges its trial and error till you get it right

Ok Thanks. However I think that I want one of the more tour style wedges as they look much better and are ment to have a much betetr feel. However I will sacrifice forgiveness with these sort of clubs. Whats your spin milled wedge like?
