Well.... StuartD and myself have just finished our 3rd round match in the Volvo Matchplay.

We played at Musselburgh GC this morning against a cracking local pairing off handicaps of 2 & 11 respectively called, wait for it, wait for it....Tom & Gerry.

A cracking game was had in blazing sunshine around this Open Qualifying course. We couldn't have asked for a better day. We were certainly up against it, though. I'm talking gross scoring of the highest order.

Lost the 1st to a birdie from Tom.
Won the 2nd with a birdie from me.
Lost the 3rd to a birdie from Gerry.
Halved the 4th (with a stroke) to another birdie from Tom
Lost the 5th to another birdie from Tom.

So between the four of us the betterball is 5 under gross after 5 and we're 2 down.

Halved the 6th in PAR....shocker. The first of the day.
Won the 7th with a net birdie from Stuart.
Lost the 8th to a chip-in birdie from Tom. What can you do?
Halved the 9th in pars.

So Stuart and I were -1 gross betterball and we're still 2 down at the turn. Tom & Gerry were -5 gross.

Halved the 10th with a net par after both playing it poorly.
Lost the 11th to a par after both hacking our way up the par 3
Stuart won the 12th with a cracking birdie. Tom missed a 3 footer for another one himself. That would have been his 5th of the day.

We're back to 2 down after 12.

Now, I'd like to continue the story with a tale of an heroic fightback with a birdie-fest from team GM.. but sadly 'twas not to be. We both played pretty poorly for the next two holes, only managing bogies at best between us and found ourselves 4 down with 4 to play.

Sadly, a half on the 15th sealed the deal and we suffered a 4 & 3 defeat.

Stuart & I were +3 gross when we finished. Tom & Gerry were -5. So we've no complaints. The better team won and even if we'd ham and egged it a bit better over that bad stretch of 10,11,13 & 14 I doubt if we'd have had the ammo to take it much further.

So, thanks to Stuart for carrying me for the first two rounds. He was the star of the show and I enjoyed every minute of our 3 games. And thanks to GM for entering us for the competition in the first place. I really appreciate it.

Hopefully we can now root for the craw & JJF69, the last pairing left, for at least another round. Best of luck, boys. It's up to you now.

:D

Until next year, eh?

Next Sunday is our D-day John.

Looking forward to it. Sounds like you had a tough day against a couple of players on fire. My secret weapon will surely not let me down.
