Using Better Inward Half in the event of a tie

The use of BIH to determine a competition winner is inappropriate. I think that in the event of a tie, the player with the lowest gross score should be the competition winner - after all, while both players have played very well with respect to their golfing ability, the low handicapper has played the best golf on the day.

Over the weekend a competition at my home club finished in a tie between one player off 14 and another off 4. The player off 4 did have the better inward half and won the competition. However, having scored 10 shots better gross the low handicapper should surely have won the competition before resorting to the lottery that is the BIH. If the 14 handicapper had won on a countback, that would surely have been unfair?

Do all clubs employ BIH or are there any alternatives being used?

Sorry, Drew but I disagree. BIH is not a lottery. We all know the system before we start so it's fair. As for giving the prize to the lower handicapper, no. What's the point of having handicaps? I suspect that you may have an interest or preference in the case you mention! ;)

It's been at the back of my mind for the past year or so to be honest. Last year we had a comp where a player off +2 shot 66 but only won on BIH from a guy off 24, the comp at the weekend just brought it to my mind again.
The handicap system is fantastic and allows all golfers to compete against each other, however, where there is a tie I think the player who has shot the best gross score should win.

Golf does support mediocrity what other sport does a player win for playing better than he normally does rather than playing the best - the closer you get to you potential the less chance you have of winning

I've never really thought of it as good or bad it's just how it's always been. I came second a couple of weeks ago on countback but didnt think much about it , should have played better.

As for the lower h/c winning I just cant agree with that , we've got to have a level playing field for all.

DO NOT TALK TO ME ABOUT COUNTBACK!

(I was one of 3 players on 33 points at the Ascot meet and ended up coming 4th - out of the prizes and taking some stick from my table)

P.S I will get my own back!

No, it's a HC comp.......

As I've said before, with a h'cap of +3, do you really need to worry about countbacks etc?? The comps you will be playing in are all off flat anyway??

So,
H'cap system - wrong
Hybrids - wrong
Anyone who doesn't practice - wrong
High h'caps - wrong

Is there a chip on both of your shoulders so you can walk straight??

so i have opinions and im not afraid to use them

And yes I stand by all of them I haven't said that I have a problem with high handicap golfers
And I dont think people who dont practice are wrong I just dont think they should expect to get significantly better -

So if you don't have a problem with high h'cappers why are you bothered about them winning something on a countback.

You should be happy that they've won it, let them get the cut that is coming there way and they will eithr improve to play to their new h'cap or be incapable of playing to their new h'cap and thus not able to win comps.......it's a win/ win for you.

Club Champs?? Scratch Cups?? Don't you have these things at your club, even from my h'cap they are the only ones I'm interested in winning.
