The use of BIH to determine a competition winner is inappropriate. I think that in the event of a tie, the player with the lowest gross score should be the competition winner - after all, while both players have played very well with respect to their golfing ability, the low handicapper has played the best golf on the day.
Over the weekend a competition at my home club finished in a tie between one player off 14 and another off 4. The player off 4 did have the better inward half and won the competition. However, having scored 10 shots better gross the low handicapper should surely have won the competition before resorting to the lottery that is the BIH. If the 14 handicapper had won on a countback, that would surely have been unfair?
Do all clubs employ BIH or are there any alternatives being used?
