UKIP Death Rattle?

And so I read today that UKIP are struggling to put up candidates for the May local elections - contesting 48.4% of seats compared with 73.3% in May 2013. Not great for a grass-roots party./

Mind you their key policies are attractive:

> A Real Brexit - with no payments to Brussels (not sure if that includes no Exit payment as well as no ongoing payments)
> Cap Immigration at 50,000 skilled workers a year#
> End sex education in primary schools
> Repeal Climate Change Act 2008
> Scrap Green taxes
> Slash Foreign Aid - focus on Disaster Relief
> Cancel HS2
> Allow pubs and clubs to have smoking rooms

Hmmm...don't think I'll bother.

And given that UKIP are expected to lose up to two thirds of their current 150 seats (Lord Ashcroft forercast) ... Nuttall proposing a Party Relaunch later this year seems rather necessary. Wonder what they'll change UKIP to mean - United Kingdom Improvement Party? Of course I can think of other words that start with I that could be used.

Is that a rattling sound I hear this morning...?

More like a distinctly loud clatter - as the 'faithful' abandon their leaders with the impression that their goal has been/will be achieved!

Farage MIGHT be able to re-ignite some enthusiasm, but - given that (the belief is that) May is committed to a Brexit and she is almost certainly going to win - I'm of the opinion that Kippers have returned to their 'natural' Tory home!

The party will be gone in a couple of years! but with it's only real purpose for existing achieved!

I'd like to celebrate it but sadly I think it's just a reflection of the conservatives lurch to the right.

My concern too. If there's UKIP members migrating (out of sight) into the Tory party they're moving into a party that is mainstream and, obviously, has influence. Rather they were they could be seen.

As a one agenda Party, they were always in trouble after getting a Referendum and, the getting the result they wanted, although a bonus, rendered them obsolete. They currently argue that they are needed for a proper Brexit. Labour's version is effectively staying in but we'll tell you we're not in! What Mrs May does remains to be seen.

It is very interesting how many UKIP Manifesto items from the previous General Election are now on the Tory Manifesto, but also the Labour one! (And I mean the actual UKIP Manifesto as printed by them, not the BBC/Guardian version made up version)

Labour took a pasting last night in the Welsh Local Elections as the have been quite awful in Welsh Government. Whether this trend is repeated next month remains to be seen

Will be interesting to compare their manifesto with that quoted in my OP - and I will be particularly interested to see how they manage to solve all our problems through slashing overseas aid (one of the main things that makes the UK stand out in 21st Century and something that I believe will become ever more important for the global standing of the UK when we are out of the EU)

Totally agree. Overseas aid as a % of GDP isn't a problem in my view. Morally it is the correct thing to do and although we have needs at home there are places overseas in seriously in need....

.......BUT - when you read abut some of the utter nonsense it goes to, it in in serious need of reform.

Yes - serious reform I can certainly see as being necessary - but I believe OA is going to be vital in maintaining our global standing and image as a nation out of the EU - it can be something that really differentiates the UK from the crowd.

But Lordy - don't slash it or pretend that doing so and putting the funds to the NHS (as UKIP suggest) is going to solve our problems - esp won;t solrt the NHS - would hardly make any difference whatsoever in fact

Why are you so preoccupied with UKIP?

No MPs and now no Councils.

As one (I assume ) left of centre, you should be more concerned with how come the Party of the working man was initially "stolen" by posh boys like Tony Blair, who did many things to hurt the working man and then the Party was turned over to utter fools like The Tramp and the fool who thinks Police are called "Coppers" cos that's what they cost....:D

Many of them are just going home and some are disenchanted former labour/leave voters who see no one else to vote for.
