I hadn't thought about this until recently when I changed my coach.

But what type of coach do you prefer.

I'll explain.

My previous coach was a genuine good bloke, easy to get along with, patient, would take time explaining everything.

My new one is completely opposite and is really hard on me. If I don't do what he's trying to get me to do, or I setup wrong, grip it wrong etc, he really gives me a good b*****king.

But he does praise me when I occasionally get it right.

But personally I prefer that.

He actually explained to me that he was going to be really hard on me when we started. He'd said my old coach had let me get away with being sloppy with the fundamentals.

He said because I'd got some talent (nice to know) I'd managed to get away with it until now. I've basically hit the limit of my technique. Which explains why my old coach couldn't improve me.

My new coach has said you need to be even tougher with people who have some talent because talent can only make up for poor technique for so long.

So would you prefer a coach that is patient with you or someone who is more like a drill instructor ?

Do any of you discuss how you would like to be coached with your pro ? Or just go with how he does it.

being in the forces, im naturally used to the 'do this do that' nature of things. the first pro who took me for a lesson aslo said i had good natural ability and really couldnt believe i had never had coaching before. my new guy at bath has noted a few flaws, mostly in my grip. i told him from the start that im here to learn, tell me what im doing wrong (stopped short of telling him to make me drop and do 50 for everytime i f**ked up!)

I prefer a bit of both. I like someone who will pick me up on lazy fundamentals but will be patient when working a change in both in terms of explaining the rationale and while I struggle to execute initially

None , prefer to do things my way and just hit balls to groove in the change. Im quite a quick learner and once im happy with what i have changed i will continue with it until it stops. When it does stop i often go back to what i was doing before the change and find im hitting it half decent again :p
