Just wondering what thoughts were out there on this.

Talking to my Bro-in-law over the weekend, who through his business is in touch with people that use Twitter and he's hearing that the younger generation are losing interest and are finding that there is too much negativity and not what it was intended for - "Social media".

I can't speak for or against as I don't use it and wonder is it really that important and necessary, as to me there are plenty of other ways of getting information.

Or am I completely out of touch with today's technology?

I use it. Tend to follow a lot of golfers and golf related people. Tend to get put off when it descends into flame wars but then I feel exactly the same on here when threads slip into anarchy. Usually gets resolved and normality resumes. I like social media (you tube facebook etc) and it is a great way to speak to friends and family more than knowing what "celebs" are doing. A lot of it is used properly (GM prime example) and is a good tool to learn new things and take advantage of some good offers

I follow Homer on twitter, and a lot of other people. It is what it is, it can be rubbish and can be very informative. Links are put on from from the media, to news items, offers etc. I must admit I dont read newspapers but get most of my news from the BBC and its twitter links.

It's good for following celebs...but sometimes...a business can't sy what it needs to in 140 characters.

Social media will declare the more businesses find ways to pester people. Facebook as an example, adverts on friends pages on yours?

I'm on LinkedIn and that's it.

IMHO business cant ignore social media.. Twitter can help spread the good word, but ironically bad news spreads faster. Dont follow any celebs (other than Homer). Loads of golfers and golf mags on it.

Callaway is revealing its new driver on twitter first.. and looks like an interseting campaign.

Rupert Murdoch recently used twitter beautifully.. http://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/ceo-should-do-twitter-customer-service.html

So yes, long story short, great place but business needs to have rules & etiquette around usage.

I think there's probably a place for it, but not sure what that place is. It seems to me that the slow dawning that social media interactions (I.e. tweets/posts) have repercussions if slanderous etc is stunting growth of it.

Still surprises me the number of people who don't realise that these things are like writing open letters!

Depends what you use it for like all social media. Personally I have just kept up to date with my local non-league team (Guiseley) who incidently have just lost in the 90th minute :-(

It is utter keech, used by attention seeking bores in the main - see Ferdinand, Rio, for example.

On top of that, it is horribly laid out, and will I'm sure have gone the way of MySpace & BEbo in a couple of years.

I use it and find it a useful tool.

Some of the banter between tour players, Westwood and Poulte spring to mind, at times is quite funny.

I follow quite a few of the guys on here and see it going from strength to strength over the coming years. Put another way. It's better than Facebook!

I spend too much time on this site, so there's no chance that I am going to get involved with social media sites.
