New desktop on the way, so whats the best way to get data off the old one onto the new ?

Is it easiest just to transfer to data to an external drive or will I need to connect the two and transfer that way ?

external drive is always easier, about £40 for a 1Tb drive which just plugs into a USB

Just copy the user data, programs will need to be installed from scratch on the new one

Do you use a program for your emails like windows mail/windows live mail/Outlook? if so you need to get this data too and dont forget your address book and favorites.

Any probs shout, what did you get in the end?

That HP.

I use outlook.

I'll look into an external drive, Just remembered that I've got MS cloud, so I'll check all is backed up there too.

The outlook data (Contacts, calandar, mail etc) will be on a .PST file, shout if you cant find it
unless of course you are using IMAP in which case your email data will get synched up automatically.

Thought you said those HP machines were out of stock?

When you get the new box, you need to make sure that your main data storage folders ore on the larger drive, if they are not, shout and I can walk you through,

They were but I'm in no real rush, but I had to order within 3 days to get the cashback deal.

going to swap over tomorrow.
Been looking at the older PC and seeing whats installed on it.
There are two folders, Program files and program files (x86), whats the difference ?
They seem to contain a lot of duplicates inn each ?

Other that that I guess I can just run cc cleaner to see what I've got ?

Forget those, all programs will need to be reinstalled

All you need to back up are the user data files
So Contacts. Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures, Video and email

PM me if you need any help :)

I 'm not thinking of transferring, just want to know what I've got so I can do a clean reinstall.
