I have to say I quite like the woods but the red and gold irons are not my cup of tea.....
Wedges are good, obviously, but a tad upright for me. I prefer Mizuno (63 degree lie) over Cally and Cleveland (65 i.i.r.c.)

A few of these companies are the same.

Titleist/Cobra are under the same umbrella and;

Srixon now own Cleveland.

Its horses for courses when it comes to who makes "the best" equipment. I'm a huge Ping fan while my mate wont buy a driver other than Callaway.

What is the criteria then, who we think sells the most or our personal opinion of who is the best all round manufacturer?

The original ones you posted Dave I would probably agree with.

I love my FT-5 and cant fault it but by Titleist 3 wood is unreal, hard decision. Over all then I suppose it would have to be

Woods:Titleist
Irons:Mizuno
Wedges:Mizuno
Putters:Oddysey
Balls:Titleist

Not exactly how my bag looks but I would like it too.

On the Ben ross front, these guys deserve alot more credit than they currently get. I just bought a v5trimass 4 iron rescue for £29, I would have happily paid £80 for it.

Round my way, Taylormade seem to be leading the driver race. But I do see alot of variety. no irons, putters or wedges seem to stand out for me, Callaway and Taylormade I would say at a push seem to be the choice of iron.

Mate of mine raved about a set of clevelands he had for years, but traded them in for some MP52's. He knows whats good for him!

I would say top 8 makes are- Titleist,Taylormade,Callaway,Mizuno,Nike,Ping,Cobra and Cleveland

next would say Macgregor,Srixon,Wilson Staff,Bridgestone and Adams

My sentiments exactly, although Cobras place is debatable in my opinion.

And in terms of specific clubs:

Driver: Taylormade
Woods: Ping
Hybrids: Adams
Irons: Mizuno
Wedges: Titleist
Putter: Titleist (scotty Cameron) / Mizuno (Bettinardi)

Why have so many people opted for odyssey putters, they are no way the best putters on the market. Scottys and bettinardis make them look silly- even their black series are inferior. I would also opt for a ping redwood over an odyssey as well. Odyssey inserts are excellent to be fair, but overall their putters are not the best- even if a lot of pros do use them. This is just my opinion though and I am sure others will disagree. Oh and I am surpised nobody has voted for Yes! putters, these are very good as well, I would definitely have one of these over an odyssey.

I haven't ever used one but would Yonex clubs qualify for a place in the second division of manufacturers?

I disagree over scotty cameron/bettinardi being the best, yes they are great putters and i do use a cameron but odyssey are so good a lot cheaper only reason i dont use one is my clubs green are pretty slow and a soft face putter with a soft ball i have to hit it instead of stroke it hence the change,

Scotty Cameron/Mizuno are the best made works of art but they aint to everyones taste where everyone can play a Odyssey of one sort or another

It makes no sense this thread. Its all about what works best for each golfer no matter the make, I tend not to buy the top 4 brands as I don't want to pay over the odds for some Tour players kit but if a Ping set of irons worked better for me I would buy them but since they didnt and the FP's felt better for me than Mizuno, Ping and Wilson I bought them.

I think some of it is purely down to the pro shops and specialists and their suppliers, complimented by sales ability, promotion (business) and promotion by golfers. The fact that types are localised in certain areas also suggests limited will by golfers to explore the golf kit ranges.

Yes.....agreed, the question came up because a random bloke walked in off the street with a wedge (of cash) to buy some kit. I wasn't after peoples choices (although I am interested in opinions) just a hard "these are the top makes" in terms of sales volume and product credibility.

I suppose like saying Toshiba, Sony and Panasonic sell the most LCD TVs. I wouldn't buy a Toshiba over the other two.
I would however (and have done) buy some 2nd or 3rd division makes of kit over the big boys....like you say, it's what you feel good with.

I chose odyssey as the putter I use because I felt it was the best value for money. At £80 it feels excellent in my hands, Vey well balanced, great grip. The Insert is second to non and the shaft sits perfect for my setup. I have never even tried a Scotty and dont want to, not yet anyway.

I dont think I could get much more out of a putter so couldn't justify spending atleast another £100 ontop of the £80.
