So a group of 30 year old lads are starting up a trip to play best courses through the next ten years

We will do a trip a year

What would your order be…

In my youth i was part of a group of about 10 or so who set out to play the Open courses in Scotland, we played them all at least twice, great fun, couldn't afford to do that now sadly ?

I've played Old Course, Royal Troon, Muirfield and Carnoustie.
Not played Turnberry, the owner and almost £400 summer green fee puts me off!

I would play the course you most want to play first, and work through your personal bucket-list in descending order

You never know what life throws at you, you may develop other interests or commitments, and certainly they will all go up a lot more than inflation, so when you do finally swing a club for the last time, you don’t want to have somehow contrived to NOT played your dream courses

In addition I would seek out opens and twilight deals the like, and then go down your list but making allowance for changing the order based on decent opportunities that may come your way

Yeah they are, it's a very good test too but overall we all agreed that Turnberry was the toughest at that time, we are talking 35 + years ago !
For me, but allowing for varying amounts of wind etc, I would say toughest to 'easiest' is
1 Turnberry
2 Carnoustie
3 Muirfield
4 Royal Troon
5 The Old Course
Others will disagree of course, happy to be shot down ?

I really don’t think you’ll regret playing at a top courses, it’s a superb experience and quickly whets the appetite for more and more ??

I’m sure that very slightly there is a case of diminishing returns, in that the novelty of such supreme bunkering, conditioning and strategy in course design slightly wears off the more you play…nevertheless it is addictive

One could argue that a lower h/cap golfer would appreciate it more than a higher h/cap, as they can test themselves against holes that ask strategic questions, but I have played poorly around certain courses (esp Deal and Birkdale) and still had fun. I firmly believe everyone would enjoy playing open rota courses

I would probably say that Royal Birkdale offers the best visitor experience of all the courses I’ve played so far…it’s a great course and day out, but it’s not my personal favourite
