So I played my first ever matchplay board comp yesterday. .. interesting sort of..

Had to give him 20 shot's, I was 2 down after 2 solid start, knew I was in for a tough day

Managed to wake up on the 3rd once my breakfast had digested somewhat and was 1up standing on 6th tee

My par wasn't good enough back to all sqaure

Might as well have skipped the par 4 7th stroke index 2 would have needed a birdie for a half.. 1 down

Parred the par 5 8th for a half

Another par from me on 9 left me 2 down at the turn..

Niceties are no go back 9 for sure, I've been encouraging him to much, complimenting good shot's every hole he didn't even acknowledge my birdie on 5....time to get serious

I had been told about his putting previous, well his Chipping weren't to shabby either 3 down

Sunk a 20ft putt on the par 5 11th for birdie and the hole back to 2

Pulled my tee shot on 12 a tricky par 3 leaving me an almost impossible escape, hero flop shot, tight lie blind over bunker and mound to 12 inches for a gimme half ... he's human after all

13th SI 2

14th times running out sweetest drive oob how?.. 6inches on the road 4 down 4 to play

15th him straight up the middle as normal, im in the bushes.. after a few prayers and a miracle shot 3 down 3 to play

Won my first hole with a bogey on 16 SI 3.. 2 down 2 to play

Par on 17 was good enough 1 down.. going up the 18th

Both drives straight. . He layed up and chipped on for 3 , I went for the flag missed the green ended up in the brown stuff... I let him putt before taking my shot, his first 3 putt of the day... no pressure then for another miracle up n down.. we shoke hands and walked to the 19th!

200 yard par 3 1st... wind off the left he stiffed his driver on the green... I needed a birdie for the half!!

All in all an interesting match, and a few lessons learned...

Well done that man!!

It is never easy giving away so many shots, I had a similar experience in the 1st round of our summer KO last weekend when I had to give 12 shots. 1 up playing the 17th but my opponent gets shots on the last 2 holes.

My par on 17 was not enough to match his net birdie and my par on the last was only good enough for a half so off we went down the 19th hole, a short par 4 where he had another shot. Another net birdie for my opponent and it was game over.

I'm far too nice for MP. I chatter away to my playing partner, sometimes to no more than grunted replies and usually get battered. I gave it a miss for two years because of this. I'm in for this year though. I've learnt a lot and fully intend to cough / jingle keys / help, but never ever FIND partners balls etc etc.

(Evil laugh) Hah hah hah hah hah hah etc............

I would have been gutted.... hes a 28 handicap ye? It must have been the game of his life as its sounds like you played well.

What? Why?
It went to extra holes, sounds like a good even competitive match between 2 players of vastly differing abilities. Seems like the handicap system working perfectly.

Yep, in theory I totally agree.... but 28 is the maximum handicap, it would feel like usually people off a 28 handicap cant get close to it or are on there way to being a fair bit lower. It would seem a little more like this chap was spot on 28 rather than being handed the max handicap.

Yep he's off 28... Every tee shot straight down the middle, followed by a ladies tennis moan lol
Only shot he duffed was on 17th tee, tbh he did get lucky a few times landing in patches of water getting free drops then stiffin the chips...

I found myself attacking on every hole under pressure which isn't my normal game... hey ho

Ye my feeling is that a 28 handicap will not have a good swing but much more than that will not have "game" to last out against someone like yourself over 18 holes of matchplay.

Exactly this..
I was expecting him to mess up a few more holes ( wishful ) thinking.. I was trying to be patient but he was growing in confidence on each shot,
Walking to the 18th tee he turned to me and said that his legs were shaking, I replied with a story from the day before seeing a baby ferret and an adder on holes 6 n 7, which seemed to calm him splitting the fairway. ...

My thoughts too. Does indeed seem like a 'good' match.

I'd normally back the low capper to win in this sort of match, but one 'new to matchplay' is liable to make a few mistakes that can cost holes. Conversely, especially at this time of year, an 'improving' high handicapper is liable to win more often than an 'improving' low one.

Hope you learned a bit - like ignoring his good shots and playing your own game.

A mate a myself played in a pairs matchplay comp last year when we first started playing. I think the final 10 pairs went to Dubai. At this time we were off 26 and 28. First round were at home, lost first hole and were behind until the 15th. We won the final three holes with net pars.

In the second round were drawn against a pair from the same club as our first round opponents. They were single figure players, 1 and 5 IIRC. Halved first hole, lost 2nd and 3rd. I played like a prat front nine and didn't come into a hole. 2 down at the turn, 3 down on the 10th, with my partner who had kept us n touch on the front nine now playing how I was. I then won a couple of holes, and we lost another to be 2 down on 17th. I then parred 17 and 18 to send us back up the first, which I birdied!

Walking back to the clubhouse they commented that they'd been warned we were bandits and had justified that with our win. I wasn't happy with this after all, if it was all square after 18, that would suggest to me a fair game. After a bit of debate I added up my card in Stapleford. I'd scored 32 points, including the birdie on the 19th hole.

Sounds like someone was a bit bitter in defeat

I play with Hawkeye and we've done things like the Nike. We definitely lack the killer edge and normally get ahead and then lose the last few holes. Invariably goes to extra time before we get done by a monster putt from one end of the green to the other or as happened in a club comp on the 21st the guy played a miracle shot from under a bunker lip to four foot and holes out. Fair play and we were three up in that one so should have closed it. In singles I try to be more ruthless but usually play like a plonker anyway and lose so its all academic

Does sound a little bitter to me.. but then considering you didn't come into a hole on the front 9, 32 point's is a very tidy score....

I can see there point...

28 points for the 18 holes - 4 points on the 19th by the looks of it. Say it was 10 points out and 18 back in, or 8 out 20 back in, hardly banditry, is it?
