Too many clubs....

I worked out the other day that despite carrying the maximum of 14 clubs, I was actually only using 11-12 of these clubs per round. I noticed I wasn't using my 4 iron, or my 52 wedge, and rarely my driver so I have dropped these from my bag.

Upon discussing this with my Dad he said that when he was my age (21), you would only have the odd irons in your bag as that's all the manufacturers gave you in a set!! He said he would probably enjoy his golf a lot more if just took the odd irons with him, so this is something we might try on our next outing this week to add a bit of fun to the game!!

Even if I'm not using it I still carry my driver - if only to give me an extra few inches when measuring a drop....

I often nip out with just odds or evens, a couple of wedges, my putter, and a hybrid. Oddly enough I usually score well with less clubs too, you should give it a go sometime. Having a super lightweight bag also seems to speed me up without any negative effects either. Surely a win/win!!! :thup:

Well I also wanted to go back to using a stand bag rather than a trolley and cart bag so taking a few clubs out helped with the weight being carried round the course in a stand bag.

Back to the other point I made in the OP, its no wonder beginner golfers can find it difficult to get round a course and get very frustrated when first start playing. Maybe by limiting their club choice then they might find the game easier??

Sooooo true! I only had 3 clubs for my first round and I had a great time!

I played with a lad on Thursday from work who had never played before and had only been to a range once. He turned up at the course with a cart bag full of clubs. They were a mixed bag, complete with two 5 irons. I narrowed the bag down for him and left the rest in the car. Needless to say, I think he enjoyed it and shot 114 overall, but it was nice to play with somebody who genuinely just wanted to be outdoors and try something different!

Yeah, his back nine was a lot better than the front. I told him not to bother with woods and just concentrate on hitting an iron off the tee and landing it on the fairway. Putting was a little all over the place, but the general outlook was that he really enjoyed.

I was impressed with his etiquette aswell having never played a course before. He even asked if we could let the group behind play through so he could relax a bit more which I was fine with!
