Back to my first ever Junior Championship, ( I'm not bitter OR anal - honest )
I think I'd managed enough rounds to get my handicap, and maybe one junior medal before this.
Good old Coulsdon Court ( One for the memories of guys like Homer and Pants )
I was off 18, the course was running ( NOT anal !! ).
Got off to a slow, nervy start and skied my teeshot on the 4th to just under the tree on the LHS by the ridge, but then hit a shot that sparked my round - a sweet little 5w which pitched short and rolled up for a nice safe 2 putt par. ( please remember - nothing anal here ).
Then onto the 5th. That day we were playing off the tee which was down near the trees which made the hole slightly shorter, but turned it into a dogleg hole. For once this helped my slice ( yes I had it even then ). Slapped one down there which rolled into the light rough on the RHS of the fairway, just staying on the flat.
Then possibly the best shot of my life up to then - Petron Impala blades, remember, and managed to hit a 3I out of the sweet spot, it pitched short and left, and rolled with the slope, to about 2 and 1/2 feet.
( Please remember this was only 30 odd years ago - I'm NOT bitter ).
( Or anal )
Read the putt perfectly.
Bottled it
Decelerated into it, so it dribbled off to the right.
That would have been my first ever eagle.
I eventually got one earlier this year, but that was with a 5I that went in from the fairway, not the 'proper' way.
Can I have a mulligan, please ?
Now remember, I'm not bitter......
Eventually finished the round on 82, and was level nett with the son of the guy who ran the juniors.
I would have won on countback, but when the guy was checking the cards he realised his son signed for a score one more than his actual total ( I think he was off 36, so there were plenty of shots to add up )
If they still have the winners boards up in the hallways you'll see his name there ( I forget what it is ) preserved for posterity.
I've not really played enough to have a particularly memorable bad shot that I'd want to go back and hit again.
However, the one that really sticks in my mind was from one of the last times I played in a Gent's match, where I was paired with one of the best players at my club. Started okay on the first and second holes, then on the third I pushed my drive into a ditch, dug it out okay, chipped a bit short of the green, then chipped on and marked my ball. Everyone else finished off, and assuming we'd already tied the hole I picked up my marker...I actually had the putt to win the hole. So I'd like to go back and take the putt.
Was early days in the round, but it really threw me, and I fell apart for the next 8 or 9 holes. I don't give a s**t if I let myself down, but when I let someone else down it really bothers me. Probably one of the major reasons I pulled out from playing any Gent's matches after that, and why I've hardly played at all ever since.
Shot I would like to take again is my first putt for eagle that I totally bottled, it was maybe 15' and I bet it travelled 5' at most.
Best shot ever was on the 16th at Leeds Golf Club, in the rough on the left, a small tree in front. 60 deg lob wedge over the tree, dropped over the flag and stopped a few foot away.
Only then, in the fading light did I realise the green was shared with the 1st and it was the 1st flag I was aiming at.
Still, the best approach shot I have hit as it did everything I aimed to do.
I remember Coulsdon Court with fond memories. I did a piece for the mag last year about my first ever proper round there with my dear old dad. Spooky thing was my first set was a set (or actually a half set) of petron impala blades which I bought by cashing in my national savings stamps at the post office (I'm really that old!!!)
