Thoughts on attire

I like to dress what I think to be smartly on the course and try and make sure I have some sort of matching ensemble (which might explain the huge shoe collection). I was taught by my dad that no matter what sport I was playing that if you looked the part it would go at least some way to making you believe you could play the game.

I do see loads of all the gear.. merchants especially at places like Silvermere but even then I prefer that to the ripped jeans and football shirt merchants we get at one of the local p&p's. To be fair though a lot of our munis are pretty good on making sure players are reasonably attired (paying in the shop helps) and on course marshalls help too

I'd like to get back to the plus fours and tweed jacket, But i'd alway's thought that there would be a great comp in playing a stableford with old attire and old clubs on modern courses.
I'm sure they do that at Royal Cinque Ports or maybe Royal St Georges once a year, hickory shafted clubs, tweed suits and percha gutty balls only going 200 yards at best and killing your hands with any off center hit!!

That would sort the men from the boys's, perhaps golf monthly could do a piece on this?

As long as people make an effort even if they look like a banana (Garcia like at Royal Liverpool), or classic Poulter with matching everything.
The football shirt etc... is a lost cause, but will always have a part to play in the game. The problem would come when someone completely against the grain starts to get on to tour. I'm not sure if there is a dress policy, but if someone was that good and refused, what could be done???
Tiger has already got rid of the classic polo shirt for a crew neck!

If i had to describe my attire I would say smart, coordinated but not too daring. Picked up from top adidas trousers and tops in the States just before X-mas so cant wait to get them on the course when the weather gets a bit better.

I only have one dislike when it comes to golf attire...

NO WHITE TROUSERS FOR MEN!!!!!!

extra-especially anything that will go transparent ala Lee Westwood or the nightmares sported by Ernie Els recently!

Makes me feel ill to see those skinny little legs as the sun shines through the fabric... Eeeeeewwwwwww! :(

(I did think Sergio's trousers looked a bit like a shellsuit last week, not especially cool in my book)

I always ask my missus if I look alright before I go and she tells it as it is and makes suggestions. I do however tend to leave the matching earrings and clutch bag in the car.

;)

Try playing at Temple Newsam in Leeds!

I played there often last year (it was cheap, a pretty good challenge and pretty much next door to my old house) but the states i've seen some people around there playing is borderline ridiculous.

I've seen people in 3/4 length combats and a shirt suited to town on a friday night, tracksuit bottoms and football tops, football shorts and vest tops....you name it!

Its just not right, if you're going to play the game, at least look the part! :(
I live about 5 mins from Tempsy and you are right that's what made me go to join a private club, full of Charvers (leeds speak for chavs) drinking cans of lager smoking wacky stuff and tearing up the course. It does have a large number of decent members but they are fighting a loosing battle.

The amount of aggro I got there from gangs of scumbags on late evenings there last summer was ridiculous. Me & my son were playing and were coming down the 17th on the bottom course, both had tee'd off, when a gang of mongs from Halton Moor stomps across the fairway and nicks our balls.

We got down to where they were, dropped our new balls down and proceeded to play, only for these imbeccile's to start chucking stones at us so we picked up and walked off.

I joined a private club 2 days after that and havent played there since :(

Yep, thats Temple newsam for you, sad really if it were private and away from that estate it would be one of the best in yorkshire. Little known fact that Peter Alliss's dad used to be the pro there many moons ago.

I think that if you turn up to play a round in smart attire it gives you a little boost of confidence, I myself like to look good on the course, I have more golf clothes than normal clothes.

Black trousers, black tee shirt, purple and black fleece, black waterproof jacket if it's raining and a black beanie or my trusty Guinness cap.

Dressing smartly has no effect on my golf, I can be equally as pish in jeans and a tee shirt.

Another little know fact, The top course (Lord Irwin) was Dr Alistair Mackenzie's first ever course he designed, followed a couple of years later by the bottom course (Lady Dorothy).

As you said, if it was a private course, with 12ft high electrified fences erected around the perimeter and with a little bit more thought into bunkers etc, without doubt it would be one of the top courses in Yorkshire.

As it is, its a muni that isnt greatly looked after, with not many challenges or hazards and is roamed on by gangs of village idiots!

My favourite outfit is a pair of coffee coloured chino's with either a yellow or black polo top.
I think that looks superb and I can almost guarantee 20 points plus when I'm dressed this way.

Hang on - let me check the URL.........no, it definitely states Golf Monthly - I thought for a minute that I'd wandered onto one of Gok Wan's forums by mistake.........

I'll wear any colour as long as it's black.

Unless it's really hot then it's open season - pastels, fushias, pinks - with matching skin tight shorts.

:D
