My dad bought a TV specifically for the 1953 Coronation. We had all the neighbours around to watch and have a party. My Gran allowed me 1/2 glass of her Mackeson and later a glass of her port.
My uncle went one further. He claimed to have watched in colour!
But in fact it was a liquid filled screen fitted on the front of the TV. The liquid was a very week colour. The bottom was green, middle pink and top blue. (ie ground, faces, sky).
I remember at about 14 years old saying to mum that I'd seen a pair of shoes in a swishy shop in Croydon for £5 !!! I remember saying that "in my life I shall never pay £5 for a pair of shoes"
I never did ! Bearing in mind that most of my school shoes were from jumble sales
My Nan used to give me a thimble full of Guinness every Saturday while I smashed the living daylights out of her piano.
Dad on harmonica she could play that thing.
Almost everyone then ( early 60s ) could play some instrument.
