We had two young guys virtually sprinting round today, they caught us just after we had hit our drives, (straight down the middle) on the 14th, and then invited them to play through. Now these guys were good, we had been watching them approach us and they were really hitting sweet shots both of them. Anyway they both hit slices from the tee, and then we had to follow them as they struggled to recover. By the time we had finished the 14th hole they were already on the 16th hole, they played the 18th as we were walking up the 16th fairway. They must have been on a promise!
Played 9 holes yesterday (by my self as i have no mates ) two ball asked if i wanted to go first....no thanks! then caught up with a 4 ball......u wanna play through!! ....no thanks.... is it just me that would say not to a 4 ball....there were only 3 holes left
Two things about asking the group behind to play through, and why, apart from it being good ettiquete, you should always do it. First, you will inevitably find the lost ball immediately after doing so, and second, as the op suggests, someone in group behind will almost certainly knock it in the doo-doo too, usually short of where your group is, and they'll tell you carry on. Result - no one waits and everyone's happy.
I'm always conscious of the traffic coming up behind particularly in a competition as noone likes hanging about on every shot while the group in front reload, replay or stumble around in the rough. Like others if I'm playing a solo round I'm usually out there trying a few things anyway and so in no great hurry and if I start catching others up I'll play a couple of balls or chip and putt for a bit. Sometimes if I am hitting well and got a half decent score going and there is space to move into beyond the group I'll go through but not usually too fussed either way
I absolutely love playing through groups, I find that when playing solo on your own course, you can become very casual in your play! When i'm called through it makes me concentrate more, and 90% of the time hitting a good shot!
Although playing through on par-3's is a bit harder because you have to hit a green rather than a wide fairway!
Just putting out on 16 the other day and 2 guys on a buggy went across the fairway behind us from the 13th over to the 17th then when we walked up 1 minute later said 'you can play through if you like'.... like we should be grateful!
We both put our shots out right but decent enough and fairly long just off the fairway and one pipes up - 'it always happens that way when someone plays you through'
