There is something fundamentaly wrong with me

Well, after Tuesdays best ever round of 84 i played on Thursday, same course, same conditions with 2 lads from work and had a mare....shot a 100 which was very disheartening as you can imagine.

I was annoyed more than anything else as i felt really up for it, i just didnt know what i was doing wrong.

So, this morning, off i trudge by myself again, same course, roughly the same conditions (little bit windier today) and shoot an 86 which is 2 under my new un-official handicap!!!

What the hell is wrong with me???? As soon as i play with someone i fall apart at the seams, when i play alone i play loads better. Am i trying to play the other person too much and not the course when alongside a partner? I have no idea.....

Sounds like you're too pre-occupied with perhaps impressing whoever you are playing with, without just relaxing and not trying too hard ?

Something easily done, especially if they are better than you.......
 
I have found I can very easily be too up for the game, get involved in the banter, concentrate too much on what others are doing and shoot crud.

I played last week and although it wasn't my best score, it was my best round by far. 9 pars 31 putts, 6 greens, 8 fairways(i think 8). Apart from the 8 on par 3 10th i would of been shooting 70's easily. The only problem was, I was bad company, I hardly engaged in a conversation and was very focused on playing.

Maybe this is what I need to do for the medals, and leave the banter to Monday mornings.

I dont believe i was doing much different, maybe swinging my driver slightly different as i've just had my swing plane completely changed for it!!

It just seems that whenever i play with any of my peers from work i have a disaster, and then i go telling them about the scores i'm posting when i play alone and it makes me out to be a complete tool when we play together :(
 
It might be a case of sub-socsciously swinging harder or faster to hit the ball that bit further or trying to shoot every pin out. On your own there is a more relaxed tempo to the swing and I would guess the course management is better.

I've found it tough at forum days to play well especially when playing with guys for the first time or on a new course. However I've found that as the round has gone on and the banter increases I actually relax more and play closer to my normal game

And there in lies the answer?

Putting pressure on yourself to perform is a guaranteed way to destroy a round for me, as soon as you have a bad hole it becomes a "that's it" mentality.

Pro's don't go out thinking "I'm going to shoot a 66" they take the opportunities when they present themselves.If you stand on the first tee thinking "I need an 84" then you are already counting down from shot one and putting pressure on yourself.

Relax, play the hole not the score and when you are on your own take note of what you do.I would imagine it's quite simple, you just go and play.

Seriously - this happens to everyone at some stage or another.

You think you've got it cracked and then the Golfing Gods bite your bum when you're not looking.

Accept it, move on and remember the good scores.

Did you give up because of the inconsistency in your game ?

In the Ask the Experts section you are able to post a video of your swing, one of the Top 25 coaches will then post their analysis on your swing and offer you advice to help you improve. There a many many people on this forum with helpful tips, knowledge and experience to share.
 
I gave up because of snap hooks and blocks.
68 one day 88 the next.
do I have to pay for tips and who are the best
 
Thats golf -18 chances to make a complete a#*e of your round. Enjoy the game leave the score to look after itself, if it was easy there would be no point.
 
Keef, bad luck, it can happen to anyone.

I know this sounds kind of obvious, but in general, really terrible rounds seem to get less likely as your h'cap betters. Off 18, I could've managed a 100, but off 12 it's probably not going to be a 92.....if you understand me. I can't remember a player off 10 playing to 90, for example.

For us mere mortals, golf is often about how bad the bad shots are, therefore, as you get better even a bad round doesn't get really terrible....then again a single figure player ought to be more cross with himself for making only 25 points of something....

Chin up, another stormer will be around the corner.
 
Pressure my man Keefg. I can shot 70s & 80s alone but in comps it was 100s & 90s, it takes a little time to get used to it but now I am shooting in the 80s in comps and no doubt a good round is on the way.
 
I remember when my wife (then my girlfriend) first came to watch me play golf...had entered a big competition at Celtic Manor (of all places) and she fancied coming down for the week-end and said she would caddie for me.
I had been playing really well on the run up to the day, and was playing with my best golfing mate, who I always had a right "ding dong" match with and usually play my best golf when I am playing with or against him. The pressure was on, I was determined to show my girlfriend how well I could play, and soooooo wanted to beat my mate around this tough track. Result? I played like an absolute drain. I don't just mean bad, I mean fecking awful. So bad in fact that on 3 or 4 holes on the back 9 I couldn't even be arsed to complete them. The game was over by about the 12th hole, I finished plum last in the competition where there were about 50 players...did I feel a right knob.... :o :o :o
Following morning I went out again with my mate, but the missus stayed away, I think she went shopping!
Played out of my boots and beat my mate 4&3.
I don't normally feel pressure, I'm up for a scrap and will have a go at most players and usually make a good fist of it. But the added pressure of trying to impress my wife got to me. She very rarely comes out with me now!
