I was intrigued by an interview with Jeremy Clarkson when he had visited some troops in Iraq. He was being flown in a helicopter, with Vietnam style gunners hanging out the doors. A guy fired an rpg at the helicopter, and Clarkson queried whether the machine gunner was going to return fire. Apparently not, as under the rules of engagement, they had to wait until fired on twice, in case the first shot was a mistake.

What should they say? Should they regret what they have done? They are trained to talk/think that way. They are trained to not think about the lives of the people in their gun sights - just pull the trigger, do their job and fly home a hero.

Did you ever see the video of Ken Bigley? I'm going to guess not. Perhaps you should watch it and see what it's like to see men dancing around holding the head of an innocent man!... and then tell me that the Americans are in the wrong.

Do you keep choosing to miss my point on purpose, or dont you understand it ?
I dont expect any trained forces personnel to feel any compassion for those they kill, if they are in a real situation of 'kill or be killed'. Even the loss of compassion for civilian 'colateral damage' could be excused or accepted too perhaps, but in this occasion, the glee demonstrated at the bodies they have shot to pieces is genuinely bordering on depraved and Psychopathic.

I did view the video of Ken Bigley's death actually, and immediately wished I hadnt. However, to liken that to this incident is rather perverse surely ?
That act was commited by supposed radicals intent on killing innocents, which they do without compunction on a regular basis.

Now, as Ethan succinctly points out, I thought that both we and the US were supposedly trying to educate these people, and to simply act in exactly the same way is merely fuelling the hatred against us even further.

You just said you.. "don't expect any trained forces personnel to feel any compassion for those they kill" and then go on to say.. "the glee demonstrated at the bodies they have shot to pieces is genuinely bordering on depraved and Psychopathic"

... by the use of the word NICE?

I thought I understood your point when I replied..

Now I'm interested to understand what it IS you are actually trying to say...

It seems you have a greater problem with the WORDS they are saying but not the actions - that's kinda weird in my book.

Are you insisting that all conversations fall within your own perfect criteria? because I couldn't care less if they pray, swear, insult my mother, freak out, start crying, talk about cross-stitch patterns or break into song! The fact that they are there and prepared to do the job they are being asked to do (they had to be authorised to fire) without hesitation is enough for me.

My main concern is that people like you and Golfer110, or at least American versions of, .......are serving in the forces.

then get off your high horse, join up and improve the standard of the forces you denigrate so readily.

Jezzuz Christ.....would you like to point out exactly where I have 'denigrated' THE Forces per se ?

The Crew in the Video are the ONLY people I have criticized, and even then, not for their undoubted skill an ability in killing 12/15 people most efficiently, but for their lack of ability in actually identifying them as hostile, and then the sick glee they derive from the results.

For what its worth, I dont think we'd find an incident like this involving British troops, or a lot less likely. Its the Yanks that are being criticized.

You might be ex-forces, but I think its you who's on the high horse matey.

how else should I interpret this?

Actually, you've hit the nail on the head I guess, there are people like you serving their country, supposedly.
The alternative is probable incarceration at Her Majesty's pleasure.

Because it was said to Golfer110, because he said .....

"they deserved it, i'd of happily done the same"

...which was basically,......'blow them all to pieces just in case they were insurgents'.

Now if that the action you would condone even from our Forces......then I was right in saying.....
