Turned 40, 2 years ago and for various reasons decided to take up golf, joined a golf course and started playing in medals for the first time last year and got given a 20 hc, after a couple of medals went to 20.2 but then started to get an understanding of medal play etc and by the end of the year my hcap came down to 14.9.

This was mainly due to me playing a lot of golf over 120 rounds in 2011 and practicing hard at my short game. I played in almost every medal apart from 3 when I was away on holiday, and to be honest since the medal season has finished I have been practicing a lot and got clubs suited to me more a new mallet putter, 2 wedges, 2 diablo hybrids steel shaft, a tm v steel 3 wood and a new driver and my game is steadily improving, so much so in the two medals we have had so far this year i have went from 14.9 - 14.3 - 13.7 so why AM I A COWBOY/BANDIT !!.????

To be fair most of the comments are in jest but it still gets my back up, a lot of time /effort is going into my game, and I am slowly getting the benefits, rant over ! does anybody else get the, wheres your horse tag, nachos for dinner etc etc

I suppose these comments "spur" me on !!

I get them from time to time. Can't say that I care enough to start a thread about it though.. Take it as a compliment. Most club golfers do not practise and don't understand those that do... Rise above it and ride off into the sunset on your trusty steed Silver....

I got called that on Saturday when my partner and I beat a couple of low handicappers in the winter league. I shot 1 under gross for the back 9. Like you I practice, have lessons and purchase good equipment. How can I be a bandit off 11 h/cap ?

I think its a tag most of us have had at least once.
The reason is weve all had a round below the norm
But me i take my hat off to you.
Too many people moan about someone whos outplayed them, but they
are unwilling to do anything about it.
Week in week out they turn up and play at the weekend, have done no practice
but still expect to play below there handicap because they think they are better
than they really are.
Keep it going, keep practicing and reap the rewards.
Well done

I would love to be called a bandit for a while.

Accusations of banditry are usually made by the jealous or those who are lacking in the trouser department. Ignore them and play on. Your handicap will find its proper equilibrium.

But what I want to know is whether you have a job and or a family? 120 rounds in 2011? Good God!

its an easy comment to throw around and IMO normally stems from jealousy youve had a good round scored well and reaped the rewards from your practice while somebody else has had a mare or not been practicing and score badly so any abuse they can throw at you helps forget there misery.
Smile and ignore keep up the hard work and improvements single digits beckon.

Ethan, I stay in the Kingdom of Fife, home of golf. I work full time in public sector procurement, have 3 grown up kids and an understanding wife, play every sat and most sundays, and in the summer months in the evening once a week, Work flexi which helps as well. Played 23 rounds so far this year so should beat last years total...

Ah, grown up kids, that must be the secret. You have played 23 rounds more than me in 2012 already.

Take it a compliment. Bandits IMHO are some guys I played against in a society game... One guy has won the last 2 matches the society played and is still playing off 28!! He scored 45+ each time! Then another guy, this fella claimed he had not payed for a few years, but used to play off 12... He played with a 28 hcap and shot 52 points! That's the problem with casual societies....

I got the label on Saturday and I only scored 33 points!

It was round Old Thorns and most people struggled. It was with a society from a pub which a mate drinks in and I was told I'd have to play off less than my hcap of 23 next time.

When I pointed out this was a but unfair and asked if anyone else would be playing off less than their official club hcap it all went quiet:D Some people just cant take it when they dont have a good day I suppose.

To the OP - well done. Hope my practice pays off as well as yours has (although unfortunately I dont have much hope of fitting anything like 100+ rounds in!)

if they know you, and know your handicap is correct, then it's just a bit of a cliched golf joke. If they don't know you then they are knobs ! use it a motivation to spank them again next time.

either way don't worry about it

I'd love to be called a bandit, it would mean I was knocking it around OK and being competitive !

alternatively you could stand on the first tee at the next medal like this

Your not a bandit - you had a good day, it happens, though if someone shot 6 under their handicap on the back nine against me in matchplay I'd be calling them a few things too lol.

I get the same shouts playing off 11. As most have said, take it as a compliment. Most of the time I agree with them as you know your better than your given handicap. Been playing for about the same amount of time as yourself but started off a lower handicap which I struggled with for a long time.
I'm giving myself till the mid way point of the new season to really asses what I need to do with my game to hit mid/high single figures.
Good going on the rounds so far. I had 126 rounds last year and hoping for over 140 this year. 17 rounds complete so far, only bad weather has held me back from playing more.

Stick at it and you'll get lower in no time at all.

i don't think you qualify as a bandit, you're in the handicap system submitting cards from medal rounds, imho your getting just rewards of pro shop tokens for your improvement

i would classify bandits as people who get their handicap when they first start out, don't make any effort after to bring it down by submitting cards, then occasionally pop up in competitions and clear up

Firstly Mike, great work on getting your handicap down as you have. Top effort. It's clear you've put in the time so any bandit name calling should be taken as a compliment. If it's not said in jest, then whoever is calling you that is clearly a tit, jealous or both. I've been called it before but in jest, and have called a few friends it too, again, in jest with no offence received or meant. Keep up the work you're doing. It's obviously working.

I wouldn't worry about it. i get called a bandit by the guys i play with. I'm the highest handicapper by about 5 shots in our roll up. On my day i can shoot the same sort of scores as them but also 20 over that:)

Was asked to play in a team event at the weekend by two mates who are both 3 handicap. They were winding a few of the others off before hand that we were going to win css the had Poncho Villa in their team...

We less than over the moon when said bandit had a case of the shanks;)
