A thought occurred to me the other day.
Should our illustrious Scottish Bretheren decide in their infinite wisdom to become an independant state, will the "British" Open have to find several new homes as Muirfield, Troon, Turnberry, St Andrews and Carnoustie will no longer be part of "Britain"?

Because there is no such competition as "The British Open" it is called "The Open Championship"

I agree.

If Scotland became independent (like/as in another country completely free of England) and the R&A are based in Scotland, it wouldn't surprise me to see the English venues removed off the list for good. I wouldn't blame them.

Even although I am a staunch Scottish Nationalist, I'd be quite happy to see The Open Championship held anywhere in the British Isles.

This includes The Republic of Ireland, which like Sotland is also part of the British Isles.

It is only the United Kingdom I wish to see broken up.

I'd also be quite happy for Scottish players to participate in the Walker Cup.

The best way to describe it is by drawing a paralell to Spanish and Portuguese people, both of whom are quite happy to be referred to as Iberian.

But in terms of participating in European and World 'events', or on international forums, do so as seperate, independant nations! Scottish independance would affect the Open as Scotland would break away from the United Kingdom.

Forgot to add that the status of the The Open itself wouldn't change seeing as the R&A would still be the world governing body, but the English courses would probably need to be removed from the Open rota, unless the R&A changed the criteria to courses in 'Scotland and the United Kingdom'.
