The Open 2020

Anyone got local info on attending this without a car.

i.e. flying to Stansted or Southend and using buses / trains to get about.

Would it be practical to stay somewhere like Margate for a couple of nights?
Assuming this would be potentially easier than being closer to London?

Cheers

The train is your best option. Even getting into deal and trying to park in the town is (will be) a nightmare. Infrastructure certainly isn’t ideal. Margate is direct train approx 30mins but may cost a premium due to summer season and school holidays start around then.

Dover also direct train (closer too) and likely a little cheaper.

If your flying I'd go to Gatwick, jump on the mainline route there to Victoria, Then simply change platforms to Dover Priory Station. Simpler cleaner way of doing it no need for underground and more direct. Stay in Dover which for the exception of the castle isn't pretty but you'll be able get a direct train from there to sandwich. Simplest way to do it I'd say.

Deal or broadstairs are nicer than Margate but id imagine getting a room might be an issue. Saying that there are some nice places to eat and drink in Margate if you know where to go.
Its a fair trek from the station to the course at sandwich and i've always found that the buses are slower than walking.
There was talk of a temp platform being built nearer the course but haven't heard any updates on this.
my club has been asked for volunteers but a lot of friends who did it last time said they would bother again.
I'll probably go on one of the practice days and Friday.

There's a Premier inn and a Holiday inn at Minster ~ 5 mins walk from Minster station.
Direct access onto the Thanet way as its right next to it ! for those driving.
Some decent pubs in Minster and a nice indian too.

That's some great info, although can't book that far in advanced with either of those chains yet so I'll be keeping an eye for those once they're live. The room I've booked in Margate is free cancellation, so it gives me some freedom to keep looking at least.
