Was reading my new copy GM last night and noticed a letter in the readers section from someone complaining about the apparently increasing number of tour pro's with unkempt facial hair. It was stated that they should either have full beards or be clean shaven, to which our dear editor agreed.

I guess I fall into the unkempt brigade. At 45 years of age, I still suffer from shaving rash if I clean shave (wet or dry makes no difference, have tried everything over the years). Consequently, I now only shave twice a week, and only to about 1mm, and have done for the last 20 odd years. It's very likely on Saturday morning that I have 2 or 3 days growth on my face.

My clothing is always smart and I have very good manners, there are many other people on the course a lot scruffier than me, and they are clean shaven. What I don't understand is why having a stubble makes other people uncomfortable if I'm on the golf course?

It just harks back to the old days traditions which rightly or wrongly are upheld by a lot of stuffier and dare I say posher golf clubs. Face stubble didn't appear as socially acceptable until the 1980's I think - George Michael maybe?
No one would give two hoots at my club if you have stubble or not.
As long as your attire is reasonably tidy that should be enough for 95% of golf clubs.

Now go and have a shave Wurzel! ;) ;)

I have to shave every day for work and at times it feels as though I'm using a wedge on my neck. Bloody hate it.

Come annual leave periods I dont shave for 2 or 3 weeks at a time and its magic!

I certainly wouldn't want to play a round of golf with someone un-shaven, what about the football type celebrations after a birdie, I don't want my face ripped to shreds by someone elses inability to shave :D :D :D

I'm another who in their mid-forties still gets a rash so I only shave a few times a week. I don't see it being a huge problem and I'd rather be smartly attired with a bit of face hair than turn up like some members looking like they've spent the night in the car.

I'm glad most people on here do not mind different individual's choice and style, it irks me when people say 'get a haircut' or 'have a shave' - what's it got to do with you?!

What next, moaning about golfers with dreadlocks, tattoos or facial piercings?

I am a member of a golf club for the golf, the beer and the craic, not to look like a cloned banker.

in my previous incarnation one had a full beard or none at all. you had to get permission to stop shaving so this casual approach to having weekends off would not have done.

I have been contemplating whether it's too late to let my current adornment reach ZZ-Top proportions though I suppose there would be complaints about that as well.

I used to have to shave every day for work. I hated it. Sore face and neck etc. Now I work for myself, it's only about every 3 or 4 days, but only because it starts to get irritating, and the wife starts complaining!

I've not got a problem with it. Scruffy 'erberts (attire) on the course, then that's a different matter. But facial hair! Come on.

Coming back to the Mrs. Why is it she fancies Jason Statham with his permanent stubble in some films, but can't stand kissing anyone who has it. Likes the look, but not the feel.

Perhaps the letter writter in GM has to kiss the pros in question?

Can't imagine Tiger being allowed any facial hair considering his sponsorship deal with one of the wet shave razor companies!

I used to shave most days using a cheeky bit of E45 afterwards to keep my face feeling young and beautiful. Then I found out E45 contained sheep's fat, so I'm not quite so smart these days. Just thought I'd share....

I have to shave for work, well when I say have to, it's preferred.
I don't shave on weekends generally unless i'm... no I won't go there.
I have moisturised, especially in winter.
And I don't shave when i'm on leave. I have been known to look like the guy from the gladiator promo but it's never stopped people wanting to play a round with me and nor should it.
If folks don't want to have a knock with an unshaven bloke **** them
