The med sea migrant problem.

Went to Italy the other week and this was a hot topic. Some have massive sympathy for them especially those being used as slave labour in the south in areas and employment run by the Mafia. Some are angry that Italy is being used as a dumping ground for the Migrants. Some are proper bogged off that a German sponsored charity boat is patrolling the Libyan coast, picking refugees and was dropping them Off in Italy. “Why drop them off in Germany” was a common thought. It seems to have become a bit of a hot potato over the last couple of weeks. With Germany sorting out a bit of a deal with some country's but not others.
But why are these migrants that are picked up off the libyan coast, not returned to Libya.

Its complex. A significant amount of trafficking involves highly organised criminal groups 'selling' a dreamers world. Many are simple economic migrants from Africa usually male hk, hoping to send money home ( but also see Poland and other Eastern bloc).

We have to upset the 'market' of the traffickers and try and establish some sort of future for the Africans Ironically when some the nations were under Dutch, French and British control life was somewhere better, unfortunately the corruption that followed Independence ruined economies.

I do not suggest for one minute returning to colonalisation: smart investment strategies are the only way. Just not one of creeping federalisation as with the German/French pressure on the EU poorer members.

There is something in this. Rather than pumping aid money into sub Saharan Africa a more sustainable model should be found. The money never seems to make much difference and leads to a dependent relationship. China, with a type of neo colonialism, seems to do more good than the west does. At a minimum they are providing a market for raw materials. I’m all for taking in refugees, but the economic migrant model doesn’t work, and leads to an unsettled host country IMO

A stable Libya would help. That is the route they take before launching to sea. To stop them setting off you need Libya to function properly.

Apparently there are projects where officials, certainly British, maybe others, go to villages, towns etc where migrants are known to leave from and they give an honest talk about the reality of the trip to take, the likelihood of drowning, the reality of life when they arrive etc. Apparently many decide not to travel after this, the scheme works well and needs rolling out further.

Dreadful situation. The charity ships are part of the problem but we can't let people drown. They can't be returned to Libya as Libya is lawless on the coast and we can't enter their water's. The gangs moving these people are evil, cruel and evil.
