The custom fit dilemma

Little update, I had a hit of a demo srixon 545 and the mizzy 850 both in reg. As well as my own. A few thoughts:

Looks... in the bag, srixons by a mile.
Behind the ball, my tms

Feel... my tms

Distance.... hard to say, so not a great deal in it, if pushed id say the srixons

Flight... srixons

Dispersion... again hard to say, with no launch monitors, but the srixons did feel easier to hit.

I think my minds made up, im going back tomoz for another whack. If alls still well, the plan is to have a fitting, have a few lessons, go back again for another fitting to check numbers. And order clubs :whoo:

Little update no.2 I got my 6 iron swing speed tested on the mizuno thingybob that attaches to the club. 80mph, came out as stiff. I mightnt need new bats after all


I'm booked in for a fitting sat morning

It was down to one, but the 850s are back in with a shout.

I'm quite surprised that you were recommended stiff shafts with a 6i swing speed of 80mph. My swing speed is in the same ballpark, and in both of my recent fittings the clear recommendation was regular shafts.

Where did you try them davey? I thought the 80mph swing speed is in the regular bracket though I'm prepared to be told otherwise be the know all's :rofl:

I was recently fitted at the Nike performance centre in Archerfield and my swing speed with a 6 iron was more or less bang on 80mph and I was also recommended stiff shafts.

My best results were in the KBS Tour 90 which is a really light shaft and with the lightness of the shaft the guy felt a stiff shaft would be better....which was shown in the dispersion and distance results.

He said mph is a good guide for the flex of shaft to use but there were other factors to consider as well.

And I guess each shaft is different - the KBS tour 90 does seem to recommend stiff for 80mph

The Tour 90 were one of the recommendations I got as well, only in regular. Guess there's more than swing speed to determining the correct shaft flex...

So the tm's look better down by the ball , feel better to hit, and the DNA proves the light shaft is correct!

I've found a brand new set of the same spec for not a lot of money mister wolf, I'm literally just about to leave for a mini fitting local which has two possible outcomes:

1) the currents are fine for me and I have to man up and face the face my swing as gone walkies

2) the bats are wrong and need to be replaced.

In the case of the OP, his current sticks are quite clearly correct and is buying purely as a treat which we have all done..... But them sticks won 3 majors in 2014 and 2 medals as well as God knows how much in the swindles. They are very nice bats!

They've got them in that little range in formby Stu. Used to be red tee, now clarkes have taken it over.

Baz, while the tms maybe lovely, and the shafts in the right ball park, the guy did say they're not forgiving enough for where I'm at. In that respects the 850s came out on top. So the idea is too get them regripped an throw them away n the spares bag. Resale just isn't worth bothering with.

I'm getting a set ordered on Sat, I want the srixons but if I'm hitting the 850s better, then I'll go with them

Good lad! Seems you have thought about it. Could be tempted at a purchase back in the current state and I'll regrip myself but the price would need to be reasonable

The forged ones or not? What shaft did you end up with.

Good to hear you're sorted, new sticks WILL definitely make you a better player.

I'm still yet to come across any conclusive evidence that custom fitting is worthwhile for handicap golfers. In fact I will go as far as saying I think it's a load of rubbish.

There is so many variables involved that it's pointless. I am yet to see any player who has seen a marked improvement over fitted to non fitted. That ranges over a large scope of handicaps too.

New equipment can help but being fitted is far from necessary imo.

Good stuff matey. It's about time you pulled the trigger. In the time it's taken you to buy this bloody set, I've had 3 different sets, quit the game, come back, changed job and gone from a 6 handicap to an 8 handicap....

Oh, and Coolio is right. Custom fitting is bobbins. I should know, I've tried it 27 times

No not the forged, the cast blue ones. Can't remember exact shaft but think its ns pro in reg. Half inch longer 2* upright. Suprised me as i always thought i needed flat. Was hard to miss with them to be fair. The forged clubs wernt working today unfortunately. Reckon I went to early, body hadn't woke up.

He said he'll order monday, delivery Thursday. Hopefully get there debuts at fleetwood

Or, he could have tried a few sets that he liked, and bought the one that felt best and gave the best results. Not going down the "custom fitting" route does not mean that he has to blindly pick the first set that he likes the look of.
