This is what I was worried might happen. Comps in the UK have always been really well supported. Comps in the US, are rare as hens teetth because no one wants to play week in week out against handicap cheats.

If uk comps start to dwindle in the face of ridiculous scores, the its a massive loss to golf. All so 2 blokes a year can post a score in portugal....

I know i know, handicap committees should have an intimate knowledge of people talent, how many lessons they have, their preffered playing style and the likely effect of course conditions on each and every players score and manage handicaps to suit. Never, ever going to happen...

Many moons ago I did net 59 on a par 70...and I think I shot a 75 so that would have been very soon after I got my first handicap of 16. IIRC I was immediately cut 3 shots to 13. It happens.

With myself I'd played golf for nearly 15yrs without getting a handicap and so as soon as I got a handicap there was a good chance I'd shoot something daft. I didn't consider myself a bandit, as I hope neither did other members of the club I'd joined, just someone with his first ever handicap,

Which wouldn’t even have got you 3rd at the thread starters place.

I had a net 64 on Wednesday off of 9. Matched my best ever net scores (and was my best ever gross score) as I’ve had 64 off of 15 and 12 as well. I’ve won twice with them, lost once as someone came in with a 62.

Ah but..........My Medal score was in 1984 when I believe mens handicap level was still 24.;)

Albeit we are a shorter course and par is 69...

You wont win a comp unless you hit the 61 or below at our place. Its absolutely ridiculous.

Off 15 Id need my best ever round by a mile to even get close.

Given up playing comps.

It does directly affect you if you are paying money into the comp with absolutely no chance of winning.
Sorry, that should have been 'really affect me'. If the loss of a couple of dollars is really of concern to me, I wouldn't play golf in the first place, nor socialise with some fellow players afterwards. If that's something that concerns you, no problem, but 'it doesn't really affect me'. To me, I've generally got far more important things to be concerned about than whether someone is cheating at golf, though it might be noted for future reference.

As for scores that should win but don't, I once shot a net 63, including 2 gross eagles, at a Par 72 to come 2nd. Honest!

I once shot a gross 72 (par 68) playing off 13 at my first club..
It was a qualifier for the Lombard Trophy, a decent sized Pro-Am.
Got soundly chopped for that one.
