That forged feeling........am i missing something?????

My irons are double forged ! Supposedly the ultimate in feel & feedback :mmm:

Still capable of rattling your fingers when you thin one tho

I think the superior feel of forged irons is a golfing myth.

All golf clubs feel great when the ball comes out of the middle. None better than my current i25's from Ping. Feel beautiful when you crunch one. Just as good as any forged club I have ever hit.

I had a set of Mizuno blades a couple of years ago. No different to the Pings in terms of reward from a good strike, but plenty of feedback when you hit a crap shot. I used them for a couple of rounds then sold them. Complete waste of time - just makes golf harder.

Interesting you used Ping as an example. I've been trying the new I and the blade and to be honest off the centre of the club it feels pretty similar. Drift from the centre though and you can definitely feel a difference despite the relative forgiveness Ping have built in. There is a definite drop in distance too although the well struck ones are pretty similar, going by eye as I haven't tried these with any monitors yet. I do covet the blades as a Ping fan, but off my handicap and seeing what you lose, it's not likely although a combo set of the I and the blades is an interesting thought that's entered my head typing this

I've had blades (Maxfli Australian blade, Slazenger B52 etc) as there wasn't much else when I started and once cavity backs came I did notice that the blades of the time felt softer at that time. These days I'm not sure I'd tell the difference too much

I like the look of blades and had a few sets this last few years. You have to just love a bladed short iron.

I have since moved to ap2 irons and in all fairness they are a bit easier to hit. Not a huge amount by the way. Fats still lose loads of distance.

I do miss the touch around the greens that bladed short irons have. They don't seem to be as hot off the face and are generally easier to judge short chips and pitches.

As far as buttery soft goes, I think that is a combo of hitting it from the middle and a soft enough shaft. I actually prefer my shots to feel a bit more solid. I lean towards stiffer shafts as it allows me to have the impression that I have the face under control. When I feel a soft tip club waving about I tend to try and save shots which never happens.

Thought just materialised.......

If your wonky swing doesn't connect the sweet spot of your forged iron with the ball and you get feedback as to where on the face you did connect with, are you good enough to use that feedback in order to connect with the middle of your forged iron with your wonky swing.........

Um, no. But I love the idea that it might.

I only use the bottom edge, the toe, and the hozel. But I do like these to be forged. It gives me an enormous feeling of confidence that when I rip it off the toe, it will instantly tell me I was 3 degrees closed at the top, and that my transition was a tad too quick, clearing my hips early, and leading to a late handsy release.

Bogey?

I agree the 'soft feel' people refer to is massively overrated in forged v cast. I picked up a few scabby old irons out of the driving range bag that anyone can use and when struck well they felt just as solid as my irons. What suits your eye and gives you your desired ball flight is much more important than the mythical feel.

In a blind test, if you whacked someone on the back of the head with a 7 iron, they wouldn't be able to tell you if it was cast or forged.

Paradoxically you should feel the greatest difference with the 'hardest' ball!

Hitting side by side with, for example, the Callaway Supersofts would mask the differences significantly.

so true ! Even my driver felt forged and buttery. Actually it was more like hitting a tomato

the "mythical feel" was definitely on show when i pured my MP57`S,absolutely gorgeous feel ,
i cant for the life of me remember why i sold them though.

Still "gaming" mine, I can vouch that they feel nice but TBH no better than any middled cast stuff.

IMO its all a it overhyped. A good golf shot is a good shot whatever club you hit.
