Most smart TVs are wasted on people.
Like my car it has things I have never heard of.
But it’s hard to buy a basic tv now or a decent car that is just a car not a portable computer system.

Why sell a basic TV? Surely best to have the features installed and not use them then they cater for a wider market

Downstairs we use more of the TV function .. in the loft it's pure smart TV as we don't have the aerial installed .. just use the apps to watch TV

And if you are buying something - before you buy clear them after searching and finding what you want. I have suspicion that some sites don’t give you their lowest price if they see you returning regularly in a short period.

They do. It is particularly prevalent on travel web sites and some flight and hotel costs will go up if you visit them again, along with the obligatory notice that there are only '2' left at that price.

Am I correct in thinking that if you have a smart tv connected by wi fi to your router, that the camera and mic on it can be monitoring and even recording what you do and say in your own living room?
Same with that Alexa thingy.?
Or is that all a myth?

There is a bit of a difference between what these companies could do and what they do do. However any device that you speak to to make it do something is by definition always listening to you and that data is transferred to the cloud and away from the confines of the device. So it will hear everything you say even before you say 'Alexa ......' to wake it up. And Amazon have got a team that randomly records voice conversions that they claim they use for 'product development', but you can opt out of it if you know how to. Also they are introducing features where it will listen for say breaking glass or smoke alarms going off without you having to wake it up to alert you to something bad going off in your house.

So it is the same principle of my earlier post in that if they are using everything you say and they record to improve the product that is one thing. Whether you class that as monitoring you or not I don't know, but by definition these voice activated machines have to monitor everything you say. But what is to stop them say using the Google model and building up a picture of you from everything you say including you talking about your round of golf. Then Amazon selling ads to a seller of golf balls on Amazon, so the next time you search on amazon for some golf balls, that seller is prominently displayed. You noticed how many results on amazon are now 'sponsored'? And that they come up first in any search. ;)

I have just been upgrading my Win 7 PC to Win 10. near the end of the installation it ask if you want a whole lot of stuff to do with monitoring, adverts, location to be active.

Now if you Win 10 was installed before you bought the machine did the installer automatically opt for yes?

They already do. Well they make money out of your behaviours that they are tracking through ads when ever you do a search.

That was my understanding - and why we'll always either clear cookies before ordering a flight or holiday after searching for it, or we use an alternative device to do the ordering.

Yes it’s pretty insidious really, look at a thing on your phone, next thing ads for similar things are popping up on all the devices in our household!
But that’s your “digital” information. How long before they are analysing the “verbal” information they have harvested and sell that to the highest bidder.
