been playing mainly with irons only, till i bought a decent 3 wood last wk.hoping a better club than my cheapy would be easier to control.
anyways was crap on wkend with it so went to range tonight to practise.
used a technique that i seen on golf channel that worked so well im still chuffed hours later.
this female instructor was explaining how to hit higher and low shots and for the higher shot she said set up on ball and then look into tha air where you want the ball to go which slightly turns your shoulder position.then you look back at ball without moving your shoulders from this position and take your swing.
well my point is that this seem to me to put your shoulders and back in a good position that ive read for a driver shot.so i thought i,d give it a go with my 3 wood and i hardly hit a bad one.
im a bit worried it was just one of those lucky nights and not really a fix at all but im hoping itl make a difference for me.got a lesson fri so hoping my pro can help me further but just wondered what you think on here??
good technique or just lucky?

No. It's a good technique. Promotes a sweep rather than a chop as long as you get your ball position correct. You just want to bruise the turf rather than take any sort of divot.

hi john.
i set the ball in line with the inside of left heel.
i was hitting of the tee tho as im not good enough for the deck just yet.
thanks

Sounds right, cossie. Practice off the deck though and the tee shots will become even easier. Careful not to lean ahead of the ball to get the desired result, though. Keep the head behind the ball. Your hands have to come through in front of your body to get a proper sweep. Your pro will sort you out.

I wouldn't be able to play a 3 wood off my left heel.....but I'd have it in the same place for tee or fairway. If it works, good for you......

I employed the same technique as with a tee only feeling I was physicaly making "brushing" contact with the soil underneath the grass. Lived and breathed 3 woods for many years, but only off good lies.

good to hear im on to something.ive had 3 lessons over past few months so used 7 iron only.as a result my short game is the best part of my game and even tho i dont practice putting other than when i play i rarely 3 put(well ive jinxed that now).
but not being able to use a wood or driver off the tee is a score killer.
have scored 102 with 6 iron to sw and a rescue tho so fairly pleased with that but if i sort my distance out at the tee i know i can be in the 90s.
thanks

Try the left hand only drill (off a tee at first). Left eye behind the ball all the way. You'll feel where your hands need to be to sweep the ball properly. Honest.

thanks john il give it a go.
tried a practise swing in my kitchen earlier and hit the wall, marking me new club....aargh.
not the first time tho..picked up an umbrella once and thought i'd give it a swing and smacked the ceiling with the pointed end.havent hit the light yet tho but the wife swears i will soon.

Not quite as far forward I guess, 3/5 wood and 2/3 iron an inch further back....could get the laser measure out tomorrow!
Off a semi-dodgy lie a bit back still and try to catch it on the very bottom of the swing.....takes some skill but sort of punches it a tad....normaly with a lower/fading result.
