Just got back from playing my matchplay and royally pissed off. I was 2up playing the 8th when i was stood on left rough and my opponent on the right rough to play our second shots. My opponent then proceeds to swing and hit a tree on his back swing and come down missing the ball, the speed at which he looked up to see if i was looking made it so obvious it was unreal. I watch him play his next shot to middle of fairway then i hit my shot. Anyway down the line i hit my 5th shot onto the green and walk up and he says "how many you had?" I said weve both had 5 but he would not have it at all. He said no that was a practice but i said no way you had already done your 2 practice swings but he wouldnt have it at all. I said loads of stuff fell off the tree anyway so even if it was a practice it was a penalty but he then denied that!

We end up all square and i lost on our 1st hole on sudden death. Im trying to look on the positive side but i feel royally peed off and its made me realise its pointless playing these events if people do stuff like this.

That's tough to take and I feel your anger and frustration. He has to live with himself though and you can do no more. Read the other posts on here about the fine sportsmen/women who they beat/lost to and re-discover your faith in the majority of golfers (thankfully)...

If you went as far as confronting him you shouldn't have backed down. You should have stuck to your guns.

Trouble is how far should i of gone? Walk off the course etc? He wasnt backing down at all. Put me in an imposible situation. The guy was nice as pie all the way round and after that he kissed my backside to the extreme. I could smell the guilt on him. Made me feel sick. I was off my game and lost 4 holes in a row after this disagreement.

and where would it go if stalemate? walk off and report to the organisers or just refuse to play until he accepted his penalty?
I don't know the answer hence throwing out scenarios

Don't worry about it...he will lose the next round!

We should have a name and shame page somewhere on this forum!

Its horrible. I swear i wish i hadnt of seen him do it now because it wouldnt be nagging at me. What made it worse was he knew he had cheated, it was written all over his face.

Its the first bad experience like this ive had so i suppose im lucky. Read other people with similar stories on here and ive never really understood how annoyed they were until now.

Tough to take and unfortunate it cost you 4 holes, does leave a conundrum what you do if you reach stalemate, guess all you can do really is accept it and move on with increased determination to win?

If i were you, I'd be sorely tempted to get in touch with his oppo for the next round - all the phone no's and email addresses are on the site! warn them to keep an eye on him

cheating so and so!
