I've read alot about people giving up golf at a young age and taking it up again years later.
For those of you who did this, why did you give up and why did you start up again?
I'm guessing most discovered the opposite sex and or alcohol

I stopped playing for about 5 years when the first of my kids was born, started again this summer. The thing that I found strange was that I was really no worse when I started again (17 hcap ish) and have come down to 11.5 since. Maybe I'm just a bit more patient ?

I was young and wanted to try different things, fishing, Karate, ten pin bowling. I think at a young age you just need something nice shiny and new on a regular basis to keep your mind occupied. When you mature you are more content to just do the one thing and settle a bit more.

Its tricky getting a balance, when you are newly married you spend all week working for the man, then you have to play happy families at weekends, worse when kids come along.

Now being self employed, I can build a round in easily

tally Ho!!!

I started playing when I was about 13 and played regularly with my dad and was a junior member until I went to college and moved away from home. When I left college age 20 I played occasionally and then bought a house, got married and stopped playing again.
I started playing again a couple of years later with a new set of clubs but once again stopped playing after a couple of years.
We then had a child, moved house, I got made redundent and then I had a stroke (age 34) all in the space of a couple of years so golf was out of the question for quite a while.
I started playing again about 3 years ago with a couple of work mates at the local muni and 9 holers and this year I joined a club and try to play as often as possible.

It was Fragger that got me into golf in the first place and we hacked around Wexham Park to name but one. Then a knee injury forced me to stop cricket and I decided to give golf a real go. Joined a club and started playing. A couple of other knee knocks held me back a bit but the big one came from 2001 -2006. With The Boy coming along there just wasn't enough time for golf - too many other things to do. Then I shattered my ankle in 2005, had to keep off it for 9 weeks - 3 months off work in total and a year before I felt strong enough to swing properly.
Re-started in late 2006, re-joined a club in 2007 and now I'm going strong. Handicap's come down from 13 to 9.6 in 2 years so I'm a happy bunny again.

I was off 19 when I was 40 then my daughter was born so stopped playing regularly until this year (15 YEARS)now struggling to get off 25 but things look good for next year.

I gave up after 17 years when I moved to an area where it was difficult to get club membership. Started again after 25 years in 2006 at the age of 73. Big mistake! I was like a complete beginner again but did not have the stamina.
But I am hooked.

I gave up golf aged 18, i was a 12 handicap. This was due to work commitments. I decided to take golf back up when I was 27 and got my old handicap of 12 back. In my first season back i went down to 6 and the year after down to 4. Have stayed at 4 for the past year as I struggle to practice. I do regret giving the game up for so long but coming back to it with dedication and maturity I believe this is what helped me achieve what I have.

I didnt know a single person other than my father that played golf.Looking back i dont think i had any friends that werent Football mad. I can remember my dad asking me to go with him for a game and thinking no way, all my mates are on the Park playing a match.

Gave up when I couldn't find a way to raise the money for the first year of my PGA exams. Went off and found lager, girls and Sunday morning football. Went back briefly in my late 20's for a couple of years but never really got back into it until I moved to Bracknell and joined Royal Ascot. Not sure what really fired my passion again apart from trying to play as low as possible and having some real good golfing buddies to play against regularly.

I could barely afford to play when I was younger, so when I moved out of my Mum and Dad's to brave the world on my own I had to stop for financial reasons.

I started again this year because I wanted something else to do other than sit at my computer or playing pool.
A bit of fresh air and exercise also helped me decide.

I do wonder 'what if' I could afford the stuff I have now back when I was young and fit (my clubs were true blades bought for £30 from the second-hand rack at the local golf shop), but ultimately I'm just glad I'm playing again.

I stopped playing for a few years, due to getting married and having a family,as the kids got older that was my cue to get the clubs looked out again, have been playing steadily ever since.

I gave up aged 28 playing off 8, I got an ultimatum .
Looking back, I was very selfish and so addicted to the game that I didn't spend much time at home with the young un.

Didn't even think about starting again until I was advised to do something that would help me "chill out".

I didn't realise how much I missed it.

I golfed about 3 or 4 times a week (in all weathers) from the age of 19 to 24 and got down to a six handicap. Then I met a girl, married her and had two kids within the next five years and with everything that entails, the golf took a very back seat.

I then started working for myself and that gave me even less time for golf.

Finally a couple of years ago (kids are now 30 and 28) I decided if I dont start again soon I never will, so I joined the local club and last year GOT a handicap (20), and this year managed to keep it ..............so hopefully next year I will start getting it down a few points.

I can always hope!!!

I started playing when I was four years of age. I played as much as I could. My Dad wasn't a member anywhere and very few clubs would allow someone of my age onto the course. In fact, one club wouldn't even let me walk round with him!!! As a result I got more interested in football. Off the back of football came cricket and then as a result of my school - rugby. I always played golf but maybe once or twice a year.

When I was 14 I got back into golf and joined a local club where I was a member for over ten years. I found that being a junior member there hindered me as I became a full member - it's almost as if the adult members will only ever see you as a junior and treat you accordingly. The final nail came when I was disqualified from a comp for taking three hours forty five minutes which was deemed excessive. I lost all interest in the game then.

I've recently come back though. One of my best friends is a member at Foxhills and I played there last year and got the bug again. I've played pretty much all year and recently joined another local club. I'm hoping to get the Wife and kids involved at some point - we'll see......

So, in about thirty years I've dropped the game and picked it up again about three times. Hopefully this time's for keeps.

Sorry to go on a bit......

That's a disgraceful reason to get disqualified. I'm assuming it was a good few years ago, so can't see it happening these days, can it? No wonder you lost interest at that time. It's good to see you haven't let them now spoil your enjoyment of this great game. :)

By the way, where in Kent do you play.
