first lesson the other day, which highlighted a number of faults and we are going back to basics with the swing.

areas for me to address immediately are

posture - stand up straighter and further away from the ball
left arm to remain straighter and arms to work in a triangle

however the other issue I have is swinging far to quick. I have always swung as hard as I could and this is something I need to stop.

I have been to the range once and had one round since my lesson and I can work on my posture and my arms easy enough although I will need a fair bit of practice as it doesn't come naturally yet.

However I keep resorting to swinging fast. Its like I feel I need to do this so the ball gets distance. Has anyone got any advice on how I can stop myself doing this?

Swing tempo is something very individual, I think, so you might have to find your own methods there. For me it helps if I tell myelf to take the club back slowly and then at the beginning of the downswing feel more like the arms are falling down rather than me pulling them down. It's as if I let gravity dictate how much I accelerate the club, picking up on that feeling and then just add a tiny bit extra to that. Also I find this much easier to do if I keep my backswing short and controlled, so that I don't feel as if I have to add extra force to pull the club back over my head.

Consciously reducing the grip pressure can also help.

And keep in mind that your aim is not the ball. It's the flag (or whatever part of the fairway you are hitting to). When you do a practice swing without the ball, you want to hear the "whoosh" on the way back up after the ball position. If you hear the whoosh before you reach the bottom of your swing, you are rushing it. That's a good way of testing your tempo during practice.

thank you, excellent points. just tried in the front room ad consciously taken the club back slower seem to work as I can include that in my shot routine along with posture and arms. hopefully that can be reflected on the course......

Agree can't teach tempo, we're all different.

Couples is very "lazy" and smooth. Joost Luiten has an incredibly quick tempo.
