i was at the seniors european tour today at slaley hall, and they had a net with nike, who were doing free, kind of mini custom fits. so i thought, why not, he set me up, and they were using what looked like a portable launch monitor, it measured ball speed, launch angle, side spin and back spin. i was averaging ball speed of about 155 with a top of 159, is there any way of gathering my ss from this as i have never had a custom fit and would like to know what my swing speed is.

thanks

I'm no expert on these things but I would say while you might be able to estimate your SS, the ball speed will depend on how well you hit it and how much of the swing energy you impart on the ball so I'd say it will be difficult to be accurate

A perfect/solid strike would give a smash factor of around 1.5 which means a swing speed of 100mph with a smash factor of 1.5 equals 150mph ball speed. So I would say as a complete guess your swing speed is between 105 and 110mph.

I was thinking something like this, thankfully we have someone who knows how it works. :)

A word of warning !!! Swing speed in a net shouldn't be taken too seriously.I had a club fitting a few years ago,my swing speed in the nets was measured at an average of 111mph.Had another fitting at a demo day, this time on an open air range, standing on grass, teeing balls up,and hitting at a target.Swing speed on the second fitting was measured at 104mph,and was nearer 100mph when i was trying to tighten up my accuracy.Apparently most tour pro's are swinging at about 80-85% with a driver,so its maybe worth taking this into consideration.

It is probably nothing to do with nets or open air, and a lot more to do with how the machine was set up. Some machines in stores are set up to flatter the golfer and exaggerate the swing speed.
