Do any of you have an idea as to what speed you swing at?

My point being i spent a day with a mate trying clubs out at the range, i noticed a lot of people doing similar... one lad in the next bay to us really stood out i could hear him talking about his shaft to another range goer

He was using a stiff shaft i assumed grafalloy - either way i reall dont think he had a swing which needed a stiff shaft with is driver he was hitting consitantly 190 range about 170 being carry!

Im no expert but i feel that may be this shaft flex hindered him as the majority of ball leaked right some a untidy slice!

Got me thinking about my game and the flex in my shafts and have i feel foul of what i can only think is masculinity of having stiffer flex shafts?!

Ah but you see i dont really know my speed i only hit a 3 wood but im by far the longest in our society i put this down to the shaft head combo cos i have never hit a driver as good or far as my 3 wood

My swing speed was checked at Ping last week and was averaging out at about 89mph. Before you lot scoff, that's (apparantly) slightly higher than "average".....according to a website I've been looking at.
I have a regular shaft.
I think anything above about 100mph you would be better served with stiff

Iv got mine measured a few times its always about the 103 mark.......I can hit bith stiff or regular shafts in steel or graphite but my Cobra S2's have Nippon N.S Pro 103 reg shafts in them and i hit them fine.....My 5 wood has an aldila nvs stiff shaft in it and i hit this perfect.......My cobra 3 wood has a regular fujikura fit on max shaft and i hit this lovely as well......
I guess its horses for courses but i have friends that hit stiff shafts in irons and woods and they just wont change and you can see that its impacting there games but who am i to tell them what to play........

The swing speed at which you should use stiff varies enormously between shaft brands. For some, it might be 90+ mph, for others 105+, and most others in between. Tempo also plays a part, fast tempo needs stiffer shafts.

See if you can find a range with a launch monitor room. There's one at my "local" range, and if you want to try some clubs they'll let you do it in the launch monitor room, with a bunch of balls, and you don't even have to pay! It's a great way to blag a few free hits.

I went in there a good while back and my first few swings with the driver were over 100mph clubhead speed. The computer simulator said I was carrying around anywhere between 200 and 230 yards. (None of the fancy new drivers I hit showed me carrying more or hitting straighter than my crumby old driver, so I didn't walk away with a new club.)

I've got a cheap little Zelocity radar thing which I use to measure my ball speed, and at best I get 145 to 150mph, which I think still equates to about 100mph clubhead speed. The range balls still carry about 230 yards at best. But I tell myself these are at least 20% slower/shorter than a "proper" ball I'd use on the course! ;)

My swing with a Driver was about 99/100mph when down at Titleist, and I tend to favour a firmer shaft.

That fella hitting it only 190yds with a Driver/Stiff shaft combo needs a reality check, I think a lot of us on here carry 4/5irons that far !

I've had mine measured and it's plenty....

(now, where have I heard that before :o)

If fluctuates but is around 90 mph. I'm not nicknamed "the deadly tortoise assassin" for nowt. (shouldn't it be "ninja turtle"??)

I think all the players trailing in my/our wake are a bit fed up with the short and straight RGDave.....

- - - -

Just in case you are confused, my playing partner and I knocked out the club champ and no.1 order of merit player to reach the final of the club pairs matchplay.

The final!!! - that's why I'm taking my clubs on holiday.....

(whoops)

I quite like having a fast swing speed, when things go bad (often) it allows me to get back to nature as i search in the trees for my ball.

.....All you slow, straight and steadys, pfffttt! live a little, go for that 120% swing man!
