Having only been playing with any seriousness for two years I have always been warned off long irons. My current set includes 3 hybrids, 5,4, and 3. These were bought off the shelf and I have known for a while the stiff shafts weren’t right for my swing. The hybrids also fly way too high for me. I have just been fitted for the Titleist MB-T 716 in a three iron and will be replacing the 4 & 5 with AP1 716’s. I was wondering if people have swapped hybrids for long irons and how they got om? I would also be keen to hear what people feel the disadvantages of long irons are compared to hybrids?

I remarked to a forum buddy on the course the other evening "All I need now is a 15* iron, 17* iron and so on".

At the moment I am getting on much better with long irons than hybrids, it might be a fad as the opposite has been the case in the past. I seem to have less shape on my shots with long irons and perhaps this is because there is no bulge or roll on the face of an iron.

Prefer the look of an iron to a hybrid. Hybrids are easier to hit but tend to go too high for my liking, irons have an overall better flight for me.

I ditched my hybrids for long irons a couple of months ago for the same reason and stuck a 3 and 4 iron in instead (although strong lofts of 17 and 20). Much prefer the look of an iron and find it easier to hit consistently.

I find this "hybrids are easier" thing a bit subjective. The irons equivalent are always shorter in shaft length...

I went for 4-PW in the 716's, but also have the 22' 915H, varies on course and confidence in me as to which one (4I or Hybrid) is in the bag, 5I is best club in the bag.

What's "too" high? Have you measured the trajectory of the hybrids as they are supposed to get the ball in the air, so it stops the other end - 90 to 110 feet apex is about right. What are the distance gaps relative to the irons? Coming into summer, you'll want the ball stopping the other end on to firm fast greens.

What make hybrids are they?

I think anyone who prefers long irons to hybrids is either; a much better ball striker than me, going through a delusional phase or a bit daft.

If you find the right hybrid, it is far easier to hit, more consistent, better from rough and more confidence inspiring than any long iron. Anyone saying otherwise is just wrong as long irons are the hardest club in golf to hit well, often.

That said, it is absolutely crucial that you find the right one for your swing. Most balloon for me and I have used Callaway ones that are all but useless into a headwind. However, the Ping i25 hybrid is not like that and is a terrific club. It flies just like a 3 iron with a penetrating flight and has a small head so frames the ball beautifully at address. Worth a look.

I detest hybrids.

The bit in bold sums me up nicely :D

You two are both in the former - both much better ball strikers than me! :eek:ne:

Anyway, I prefer to procure my thongs from Agent Provocateur. As you well know from the changing rooms at Hayling Gordon.

Too sickening for you to even contemplate the suggestion that your ball striking is better than mine no doubt..... :)

I have a really high ball flight, after a trackman session with my pro I was losing distance through ballooning hybrids. I appriciate high ball flight is desirable in the summer but I should be able to get that with irons. They are Adams Tight Lies 2 as per my signature.
