My wife doesn't understand my need to play golf. We have 2 boys (4 and 2 years old) who I take to the range with me every time I go and they love it. The 2 year old has a mint swing and the 4 year old can flick it 50 yards already. I am planning on getting lessons off them soon...

Now for the crux of the matter. Do I try and get the wife into golf? Christmas is coming and lessons might be an option.

As I see it..

Pro's - Golf holidays will become a reality, she might actually start listening to me when I talk about a controlled draw into the 3rd which finished stone dead only for me to 3 putt and walk off with a bogey, I can buy her stuff that I actuallly want (GPS, Open tickets etc.).

Con's - She might find out that it only takes 3-4 hours to play a round and not the 6 I tell her, she might want to come on the boys golf weekends, she might be better than me!

What's the concencus?

For our female forumers, insert husband/partner where I put wife....

I would love Dawn to have a go but she wont even go to the course, I am fairly sure I could get my daughter to play though.

Thats one thing I have never seen yet, husband and wife and 2 children playing a round of golf together. Did once try and get my wife to the driving range but she never got any farther than the coffee shop.

HID did get lessons via their sports & social club at work and played a few holes but to be honest she never really got into it and so I was spared any difficulty decisions. She has no problem with me playing as much as I want and even the odd weekend away (sadly fiscal turbulence has vetoed that in the last few summers) and has no interest in joining me again to play. If we had kids I'd definitely want them to have a go but wouldn't force it on them if they weren't keen

I would love my wife to play golf just not with me. Now before I get grief for that statement, the golf course is my place where I do my thinking, clear me head, destress, socialise the lot. It plays an important part in my life in the same way that the rugby pitch used to. My wife has her things as well and I believe that something you can do to have a bit of your own space for a while is important.

I would love my wife to play golf if she could even get half of what I get out of the game but our rounds together would be limited to the odd knock and rounds on holiday.

We have such a family at our club and they are a delight. The Dad was once a club pro and just put cards in for a handicap after many years (think he'll get about 3ish). Mum used to be off 10 and now probably plays to about 14 and the girls play off 8 and 16. Have to say, apart from HID, they are my favourite playing partners...

As to the original question - David played for many years before I took the game up again having played as a kid. I bought him his first set of clubs and his first attempt was on the Par 3 local course. After 3 air shots my Dad took his tee shot for him - I meanwhile landed a foot from the pin ! I think he'd say he's happier now I play as he used to play once a week and now it's more like four times plus we have taken several golfing breaks together.

If she takes to it great and if not then you tried!

I think Mrs Imurg would be quite good and even suggested this to her a few years back.
Unfortunatly, she now has dodgy shoulders so it's a non-issue.
It could also severely curtail the amount of time I get to spend on the course....

for me personally, id rather my girlfriend has her own hobbies. i dont fancy taking her to golf. golf is for me as much a sport as it is a bit of away time. we have never been the couple to be in each others pockets all the time. she has her passions, i have mine and we do some things together too.

Get the wife on the course with you and take up snooker or darts for a bit of 'you time'... 100% sorted in the sport dept :D

Mrs Naybrains ain't interested in playing in the slightest so i wouldnt bother with the lessons but surprisingly she does watch it with me on the telebox and is willing to come to watch tournaments with me.
She even comes down the range to watch me and our eldest son (5) hitting baws.
There's nowt surer when she's lieing on a sun lounger at Vilamoura or being pampered at Gleneagles theres no moaning about being a golf widow and wishing she could play.

Mrs mog would be an awesome golfer, way better than me. She plays tennis to a good level (top men's box at her tennis club, ladies champion, etc). She has tried golf once, hits the ball a mile. But, she has no interest, at all.

And, she would cheat like heck. She can't see the point of handicaps, and winning is every thing.

HID has absolutely no interest in golf, or sport in general though she used to watch F1 until that got really boring and will watch England matches though not cricket. Does get frustrating when you get back from the course with the need to express yourself a bit.

The big plus if she would play could be holidays, just start slowly with the odd holiday round then go for broke.
