Just watched golfing world on sky+.

Up until 1952, you could leave your ball in place on the green, as long as it was more than 6" from the hole, and as long as it was also more than 6" away from your opponents ball. Especially if it was on their line to the hole.

It showed Gene sarazen et al having to chip over their opponents ball and still try to get it in the hole, which they were doing from 2 foot out, despite having to land it 1-2 inches over the opponents ball bounce once then in the hole.

I am not sure if this was on matchplay only format, but some great shots.

Didnt realise that, sounds more like a game of Bar Billiards

So it was possible to snooker your opponent

Interesting stuff

Fragger

Basically yes, he had to take a "niblick" and from 21/2 foot out chip it over his opponents ball and then stop it quickly enough to go into the hole.

Amazing shot.

My Grandfather was an expert with a putting cleek. He used to put check and spin on putts to avoid stymies.
In match play if you hit your opponents ball further from the hole on the green they had to play it from where it finished. To do that deliberately was deemed ungentlemanly.

In 1952 at The Open players played to the same hole cups for the two qualifing rounds AND the championship. Six rounds played by hundereds of players without the holes changed.

That was PROPER golf.

I can inagine the hole looking like a mole hole by the end of the week, after that much traffic.
