Starting from scratch

A father of one of my friends went from 7 to 3 after he retired aged 67.

His swing did not alter one bit, he had no lessons. The only thing he did was play a lot more enjoyable golf.

And i don't ,mean handicap wise:(

I’m very inconstant at the moment, one round is one or two over gross the next 15 over!
After talking to one of the very low guys at my club he recommended a local pro who runs the local driving range and Mizuno fitting centre. So went for a lesson two weeks ago and he thought I hit the ball well but with my very short inside backswing I was always going to have trouble from time to time with balls hit from lets say the neck side of the club face. So Yesterday we started from scratch!!!!

I did have a couple of lessons last year with a guy who’s the local SGU coach and does all the up and coming players in the north, uses video etc, but I found he was expecting my body to do things it was just not capable of. If I’m honest he was not that good with some old hacker who at best will be just about cat 1 unlike some of his younger charges who will no doubt go on to be plus figures. We never worked on the same thing twice and never sorted any of the issues.

The new guys wrote down all the problems I told him about and I was really impressed he talked about things ive never ever thought of before and explained them very well and had given me drills to work on for the next two weeks when I see him again.

I’m really pleased I went to him, even though I doubt I will be able to hit the ball for the next few months (Woodhall spa could be a challenge).

So would you start from scratch ?

I started a very similar path to you Patrick winter before last.

First time if had lessons, videod my swing or even had any drills to do.

Wasn't easy at first but now, I'm more than glad I did.

I'm playing with what I currently have for this season before staring on swing path issues in the coming winter.

Stick at it pal, you'll be glad of it in the long run

I do appreciate that but once you attain a certain standard its very hard to let that go . I did get to three but that was a long time ago. The problem is I still think I could play football in my head but the body says NO , My golf seems to be the same.

Im off 5.7 at the moment and i think i could easily stay at 6 with my old swing, but it would be nice to play with a bit more consistency, like you when its on song i hit the ball well when its slightly off its terrible. On Sat the Gullane boys were saying i was a right bandit the way i played. the Sunday social golf was a whole diff story. we drew a member of the opp as our playing partners for the game and the guys i was with was very pleased and was already counting the money. Sadly we lost heavily, though i still got 2 birdies we still lost those holes and a fair few quid:(

I had another lesson last night, this time there was a month gap due to holidays etc although i had been practicing with the new swing. I am really trying to work on a connected take away and not going back on the inside. The pro was able to help straight away that my left arm was becoming disconnected on the way back so I tried to keep it closer to my body. Almost straight away I saw an improvement.

When making big swing changes, the thing I have noticed is that you need constant supervision from a pro. With your old swing even though it may not be correct it was your swing and you would usually know how to correct something to a degree on your bad shots. However with a new swing you really do need to have someone watching you to advise. Oh well practice practice practice.

I managed when asked to hit some fades with my hybrid last night, something that would have been nigh on impossible previously with my massively in to out swing
