Morning all,

I have organised a golf weekend next month for my brothers stag do at 2 courses none of us have played at before.

I am just abit stuck on how i can score to make it fun for everyone as only 1 person has an official handicap.

There are 8 of us.....
1 person has a handicap of 15 as is a member of a club
4 players shoot in the 90s
2 players shoot roughly 110
1 lad hasn't picked up a club in a few years.

I am just wanting to find a scoring system so that each player can just mark their scorecards with their strokes and then after each round we can have a leaderboard and then a final leaderboard after the 2 days to make it abit more competitive but still fun. We will add in the usual closest pin and longest drive each day. Not sure what other games we could add in.

I would really appreciate any thoughts/suggestions from anyone on here.

Thanks

Matt

Hiya,

I went on a golf weekend this weekend just gone, and made the fatal mistake of not sorting out handicaps beforehand. We had a mix - from an official 19 handicapper to a once-a-year player who gets it round in 130 odd blows.

I went with the idea of allocating handicaps on merit of the last few rounds each person played, with a 28 handicap for a couple who really don't play very often. I was met with much resistance, some people saying other had 'bad rounds' so would get an artificially high handicap. 3 with official handicaps said it's not fair for their handicaps to be officially calculated and others plucked out of the air.

The winner of the weekend did genuinely play the best golf of the weekend, and there were no runner up / 2nd & 3rd places, just longest drive & nearest the pin. But for sure, next year, I'll make sure all players give me there score of the past 3 rounds before the weekend to make sure there is an equal handicap for all.

Also, we played strokeplay, which for me was fine, but for other was a drag. Stableford is the way forward, it's the way we'll be doing it next year!

How about two teams of four comprising of mixed ability? Bit of a Ryder cup feel and gives everyone the chance to play and if someone has a mare then others can cover. You can just play for aggregate points on each hole for simplicity. Offer plenty of prizes too (only has to be for a ball, a pint, whatever you like really): Nearest the pin, longest drive, shortest drive, worst shot, worst trousers... the list goes on.

Surely if it's a stag do then you will be drinking your way around the course anyway in the hipflask open? ;)

I agree that strokeplay is silly to play when you have a bunch of mostly hackers on a 'fun' weekend away with the lads as they just get demoralized.

When we go away on ours we give the hackers 3 shots on par 5s, 2 on a par 4s and 1 on a par 3s, and just play team Stableford with the best score for the pair counting on that hole, or something like that. Depending on how much into golf the majority of the stag party are, I'd say keep it fun and lighthearted as you don't want to be seen as the officious golfing arse taking it all too seriously when everyone else is mostly there for the beer and a nice walk.

I have seen there is a one day handicap scoring system called 'System 36' where the handicap is created after the round is completed based on how the player did.

The player would be awarded:-

  • Double bogey or worse - 0 points
  • Bogey - 1 point
  • Par or better - 2 points
Their total point from 18 holes will then be deducted from 36 to give them their handicap for the day.

That handicap can then be deducted from their gross score to give the nett score.

Surely that would make the stroke play scores closer for day 1 of the weekend??

Then that same handicap could be used on Day 2 to play a stableford competition using the full handicaps.....

Honest thoughts on that??

Blimey, sounds complicated to me. It's a stag do isn't it? Drink beer and hit a few golf shots, I'm sure they will enjoy that just as much as some complicated system to work out their handicaps.

The other thing is that if I went on a stag do golf break and someone was trying to work out what my handicap was after I'd told them it was say around 22, I'd be a bit miffed if they did not believe me. Just take what they say it is and have some fun. Most golf breaks I've been on normally end up with a few hip flasks being taken on the first day, and whilst we are not by any means drunk, scoring is secondary to having a good time, especially if it's a stag do.

And if anyone gets upset because they think someone is being a bandit on a lads stag do golf weekend then I'd say they need to get a life;).

Thanks Hacker,

Was just trying to find some kind of scoring system so all of our scored are based on the same system. I dont want it to be complicated either and thats why i was thinking the 'System 36' is the simplest ive found.

that can be completed after round 1 and that could be that players handicap for the 2 days.

Avoid individual stroke play.

I would go for four ball better ball stableford for the first round. Ask each player (except the genuine HC player/s) what they genuinely think their HC is and pair up high and low the best you can. Just get each team to record both players gross scores each hole: you can work out the nett score and points afterwards.
Longest drive, nearest the pin. Try a nearest the pin in two on a short par four.

I would go with a Texas for the second round.

So would you suggest just playing Stableford for both the 2 days?
I think most of them will want to play their own ball all the way round so they have their own score aswell.

I have no idea what handicap i would give each player though, thats why i was thinking of using the 'System 36' to work out each persons individual handicap and thats what they use for the 2 days.

Ive never done something like that as i usually just play golf with my brother and dad.

I'd give the guys who shoot 110 and the guy who hasn't played for a bit two shots a hole plus say 6 mulligans to be used over the two days.

Guys in the 90s play off 24 plus 2 mulligans over two days

Mulligans add fun - and get the high scoring guys our of messes they too easily get into - and enable them to have a second go at that 3 foot putt they missed for a nett par and 2 pts :)

Three swallows from the hip flask for a par, 2 for a bogey, 1 for a double bogey, down in one for an air shot,.... ;)

We done a golf stag over 3 days. 3 rounds. And we played stableford. Also had a (powerball) (orange ball) that you could use twice in a round. Once in front 9 and once in back 9. If you call to use your powerball it doubles the points you make on that hole.

If you lose the powerball you can buy another back AFTER that round for £5
