Spelling police

To be honest as long as it isn't text speak, way too long and dry like that CONGU thread, and isn't just a single paragraph with no punctuation I'm not fussed. I'd rather read and comment about the subjects than spend ages ensuring I spell and punctuate properly. Lifes too short and this medium doesn't need pedants and those looking to pick up cheap points by pointing out flaws. Surely its primarily about golf with a little bit of what you fancy chucked in here. Get on with it

Is this thread still running?

I must say, pedant or not, I personally find it odd why anyone would make a spelling mistake on a forum, since my browser(s) seems to automatically behave like the spelling police since it underlines stuff in red squiggly lines if it's incorrectly spelt.

As for grammar; well....I'm as guilty as anyone of making it up as I go along.

Having tried using the forum on a mobile device (a tablet) I must say it's hard work to do anything properly on it.....

hence why I'm back on a laptop/netbook for the time being.

The only question I need to ask is "is writing on an iPad as hard as writing on an android tablet?"

Yes.

I have to do a lot of proof reading at work so spotting errors is second nature to me; most of the time I avoid correcting them on here. As others have said text speak and long meandering paragraphs with no punctuation are the hardest to read so are are mostly ignored.

But can I make a plea for the poor old apostrophe? Almost invariably it's either missing or in the wrong place.

If it's funny, it's fair game.
Text speak..no.
Some punctuation is good, as are paragraphs, especially in longer posts. Much easier to read.
Simple spelling mistakes like someone writing Calloway instead of Callaway are understandable. ;);)

You old Tart!

I have to edit spelling and punctuation for a living. It's a relief to be on here where it doesn't matter. (It really doesn't)

Life is about what you're trying to say and the sentiment behind it, not how "correct" it is.

Most people who are self-appointed grammar police have a very narrow conception of what is correct, usually based on their post-war grammar school education. Well, language evolves, so deal with it.

I'd go along with that but Stapleford is just plain wrong and I will point it out EVERY time :)

I must admit to cringing when i see some of the more common spelling mistakes, there instead of their, too and to, but dont tend to jump on people. No ones perfect, some people will have trouble spelling for one reason or another.

But I think some people are genuinely trying to be helpful when they are correcting others and I dont see a problem with this. There are lots of people who are reading the internet who might benefit from this, ie children so that they dont pick up wrong spellings and it would definitley benefit them down the line.

I think you should check your spelling as well too????

Quite right too, but my poor spelling and grammar is probably related to my post war Secondary Modern education and not a Grammar school education. The post war education in the industrial North West was geared to nurturing miners and factory workers, not academics.

Imagine someone has dyslexia, probably has a hang up about, and get's flamed on a public forum. No one would like their failings publicly criticised, whatever they are.

Well said Hobbit. Being a sufferer, I generally read through any of my posts and check for spelling mistakes, 3 or 4 times, but I know there will still be mistakes. The problem is there will always be someone out there, who has nothing better to do and will pull me up on something I've done wrong. I couldn't spell when I was at one of the best boarding schools in the Country, I cant now and never will be able to. So when someone does pulls me up on a spelling or grammar mistake, I can only wish I was there in their front room / office with them to remind them, you cant always hide behind your keyboard ;)

if we are talking about "puting", then i think he is having it tough in the election at the moment

Personally, i'm a great speller - just an apalling typer
