I'm at a cross roads between playing here or going on a fishing trip. obviously being a golf forum you'll all say play golf.

i was wondering if this is some sort of special golf course? . my friend is very excited about it but it's new on me. worth a round?

Not sure it is an option but next door at Hillside is an absolute belter.

I've only been in the car park S&A once when I got lost. So I could not say if it's worth a knock.

it could be an option after but the initial round will be at s&a

Not played it (the only one of the 'quartet' that i haven't), but it's apparently in same class as Hillside and Formby - some even rank it highest!

I am from the area so know all these courses very well. I always find S&A a strange one. Firstly I will say its an excellent track & slightly easier to play (more forgiving) than some of the other local courses. It is links/heathland with some generous parts of the course that wont kill you for going offline. Its testing but not unfair and like all links needs the weather to bear its teeth. Has some really interesting sections and holes that stand up with the best.

2 major problems IMO they have: 1) there are about 3-4 pretty straight forward and dare I say it dull (compared to the rest of the course) holes. Enough IMO to put it just outside the top echelon of courses and 2) its neighbours are Hillside, Formby & Royal Birkdale.

If the course was on its own or some where else it would be noticed a lot more. Outside the course its a proper members club; very active on social media, great clubhouse and fantastic atmosphere. I dont fish anymore but I would rather play there than go fishing. New halfway house open this summer and its always in top nick. Play it !

It's a cracker and definitely worth the visit. It's not as good as Hillside next door but it's not that far behind it.

Play it you'll enjoy it, save the fishing trip for later on in the year.

One thing S&A isn't and that's dull.

It's certainly not as good as Hillside ( which is my favourite of them) and formby (not as good as hillside) but it's not that far behind them.

Whoever said this must've had too many wkd's to suggest this

Didn't say it was dull. If you read what I wrote I called it a cracking course that has a few holes that are imo dull compared to the rest of the brilliance on offer which stops it being up there with the best.

Put it this way, it would be hard to rate Hillside/Formby/ S and A / Wallasey / West Lancs out of 10, as not really a full digit between them i.e. one is a 9 and the other an 8, as they are quite close in terms of standard.

Hillside and Formby are very close, with the others being a .5 behind them, and I do know one or two who do like S and A more than the others, although not for me.

Its a lovely place to play golf. Anyway fishing is for plonkies!

Apologies, but I'm struggling to remember a few dull holes at s&ha.

Played it a couple of weeks back on the way home from Scotland. Loved it. Like most links courses it can be frustrating to play. You can smash it miles into the crap and walk straight up to your ball, hit it 2 yds off the fairway and never find it. Get past that and it's a joy. Some of the blind tee shots are tricky, the marker posts don't really give you the best line, so a bit of local knowledge is pricesless. For me front 9 is tougher and back 9 more scoreable, so if you start off struggling, be patient. Enjoy.
