A bit of a follow on really from Alex 1975 great days golf.

Sorry about the length of this post, but it was such a good day.

After a few weeks of some decent golf which culminated in winning our clubs foursome comp last week I meet up yesterday with my pairs partner for a good old fashion friendly match. Yeah alright!!

We only meet up at the beginning of the year, when he joined the club without knowing any one, a bit like what I did last year. We actually get on very well and to be fair we really have a good time out on the course and we really do take the p*** out of each over.

We normally just do our stableford scores, but yesterday he said why dont we play match play, with a very little wager.
OK I say, and he has got to give me 13 shots 12 V 25.

We swop holes on the first 2 holes. I then find myself 2 down after 5 and reduce this to one after a par on our SI6 sixth. My mate pars the 7th (par3) and then birdie's our SI2 560 yard 8th to go 3 down. I reduce this to 2 down at a nineth with a putt from 8 feet across a very sloping green.

Stableford points me 18 my mate 21. And we have both scored points on every hole.

We halve 10 and I lose another hole to a par 3 on 11 to go 3 down. We both par 12 (SI 17) to find myself 3 down but with a stableford score of 25 after 12 holes.
The thing is I now get shots on all the final 6 holes.

We halve 13, but i put my drive in a small thicket of trees on our long up hill par 5 14th. I manage to thread a low 7i through the trees to the middle of the fairway. I then hit my shot of the day when a 4i fly's up the steep slope hits the front of the green and pops up onto the green, leaving me a 25 foot putt. With my shot, 2 putts are enough to reduce it to 2 down.

We both put our drive's into the water at our 185 yards par3 island hole. My mates chip from about 50 yards and see's his shot lip out. from the side of the green my chip goes 20 foot by but i take two more to take five. My mate has a two footer for a halve but pulls it left, pressure i say as we walk to the 16th (SI5) with me now only 1 down.
I soon reduce this to all square with a solid 5 net par.

Off we walk to the 17th (432 yards SI3) all square. A low 5 wood right down the middle upsets my partner who lays up short of the stream. I then hit my worst shot of the day when my 8i doesn't get of the floor and crashes into the bank of the the small stream but just manages to stay up out of the water. My mate crashes his second over the pond on to the edge of the green. I then hit my third into the greenside bunker, a good bunker shot is not enough as I miss the 8 foot putt for a six. 1 down again.

We both find the fairway with irons on the tee (narrow fairway, trees one side, pond the other. My mate puts his second into the first greenside bunker. I have a tall oak tree to go over from 135 yards, and hit a 8i over the top of it only to find the bunker at the back of the green (first time ever) My mate only gets his bunker shot into another bunker in front of him. Mine is at the back of the sand with only about 2 inches behind the ball where the grass starts. I thin mine into the other bunker the other side of the green, but have a similar shot with no room behind the ball before the grass.
My mate chips to within 6 inches and I give him the putt. I then have to get up and down to win the hole and to halve the match. I chip to within 2 feet and leave myself an uphill putt to finish with a 5 net four, no problems.

Our scores, the match was all squared and we both finished with 39 points, and we both scored on every hole.
I think that is only 2nd time this year that i have managed to do that and I finally feel that I am getting the consistancy to start reducing my handicap.

A great days golf.
