How long will Wie be 'young'? How long can anyone use the 'excuse' of being young for cheating? I am absolutely incensed about the GUR ruling. If we all made up rules as we went along we could all be professionals = cheats??

I think she did the right thing. She asked for a ruling and then stepped aside and let other make the decision. At least she wasn't like Seve and trying to persuade the officials he was entitled to a free drop. I know she has made some bad career choices primarily as a result of controlling and badly informed parents but in this case I think she did ok

She didnt cheat,shes a pain maybe,but the authorities cheated everyone else in the field.

Just remember, with posts like that you will need to be able to stand up for yourself.
Couple of points, firstly Wie didn't cheat, as has been said, she asked for a ruling. So the rules official is the one to take to task. Secondly, I think you'll find that the professionals don't make up their own rules, it's us amateurs who manage to do that as we don't have ROs with us every time we play. It's all about understanding the rules.

I would think most pros would ask, if they thought they had the slightest chance of a ruling in their favour, it is sometimes the ruling that is wishy washy/ unfair or down right stupid and not in the spirit of the game.

She probably carved her shot into the wilds and looked at it and thought " Jeez that should be GUR. Can I get a drop here"
Officialdom takes over and says "Oh yes, we saw that but didn't think anyone would play such a crap shot to here so we didn't mark it. Have a drop anyway"
So she's done nothing wrong - the Officials need to take a good look at themselves though.

Off topic but I watched a little of the coverage from Holland yesterday and they recalled a Seve story
Him and Tony Johnstone both carved their balls out to the right and Johnstone got there first and was looking at his ball and wondering whether he could get a free drop away from a sprinkler. Now Seve comes over and says NO WAY. Johnstone replies with "good cos its your ball really" and saunters off to find his own ball

Had a bit of a rummage through the Decisions book today (sad git) and there is a decision that warrants such an area of ground being designated as GUR during the play of the competition.
Decision 33-2a/2
Declaring Area as Ground Under Repair During Competition Round
Question
A's ball is in a poor lie in a washed-out area which warrants being marked as ground under repair but is not so marked. He declares the ball unplayable and proceeds under Rule 28, incurring a one-stroke penalty.
Subsequently, in the same competition round, B's ball is in the same area. B requests the Committee to declare the area ground under repair. Would the Committee be justified in declaring the area ground under repair in such circumstances?
Answer
Yes; this applies in either match or stroke play. However, it is preferable that all areas which warrant marking as ground under repair should be so marked before the start of a competition.
