Iv been reading up a bit on the proper grip and see this phrse a lot.....Now iv a fair idea what it means but im a little confused as to what way to take it.....Some articles say to hold the club as you would a tube of toothpaste with just enough pressure that nothing comes out......

Now im thinking on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the tightest) proper preesue is about a 4 or 5.....

But for how long is this held and if this pressure is kept into impact surely the club head can twist easily with the force of the shot......

Also i can keep this pressure up until the club is at the top of my backswing but find myself tightening up to come through the ball......Is this wrong?
Is the grip pressure supposed to be constant all the way through the shot......

They say that Els has some of the softest hands in the game is this the secret to having good rythym and tempo also?

yer bout 5 but i dnt really think u should put too much time and effort into it, aslong aqs u dont strangle it or too soft and let go, your not to far away i rekon!

Bob can answer this better than me.. but he says that i had soft hands after a shot.

I THINK that it is gentle pressure coupled with a nice fluid swing and a nice bit wrist break. But i could be talking nonsense as well. :)

Hopefully but you must be doing something right DTD....

In my practice swings they feel lovely and in balance and my hands feel soft on the club as well....Everything seems to flow smooth.....I just cant transfer this to when i address a ball....I think that if i can crack this then id be a happy camper...

I always love it when somebody says they "hit an easy 4 iron".... :D :D :D

There's only one way to hit a 4 iron. Grip it to death, eyes bulging, veins on your forehead standing out, red faced and staring at the ball as if you want to beat it's brains out.
Now an easy wedge. That's different.
;)

Apply the same pressure as you when tugging at your member.

Errr.........I'd have no grips left

:D :D :D :D :D

Going back to the original post, my coach says 6 on top hand and 4 on bottom hand. If you try to strangle the club you will notice your arms tense up too. Lighter is better but not too light to loose control.

How the heck can I think about different pressures with either hand. I might start off with a nice relaxed grip, but by the time impact comes I am probably near to crushing the shaft.

Just grip it and rip it.

I was always told to use the same sort of pressure you would use when shaking hands with a lady....

Most of the lady members I come across are built, and look, like Mick McManus. So it's a firm handshake from me then, and I'll continue to strangle my clubs

Hold the club with a grip you think is a touch to soft, this in turn will allow more relaxation in your arms and shoulders.
In the hitting area the hands will automatically tighten.

Think Bobby Clampett in his book 'The Impact Zone' says that almost all amateurs grip the club too tightly.

Shaking hands with a lady? WTF?

When was the last time you shook a ladies hand?
The only ladies hand i have EVER shaken was princess Anne's.
I think I would have been in the tower if I had greeted her like I do all others, a quick grasp of the arse or a peck on the cheek or ........ no i best not continue

When boxers throw punches, their fists don't tighten till just before impact.

This enables then more speed with the tension free arms.

Try it tense and un-tense. Left jab, left jab straight right!

I've never really worried too much. I know if it is too tight as you can feel the hands not release properly and too soft and they get too active (well mine do). I just hold it, set up and block it 45 degrees right with alarming regularity.
